Logo Critiqe

Boyle River Outdoor Education needs a new identity, they have asked me to create something adventurous and exhilirating!

Starting with the logo:
I want something that sums up "The Boyle".
The unique selling point is alpine, keywords are mountain, river, challenging, problem solving, alpine, river, outdoor education. Ill try be breif...

Here is what i've come up with.

01. Alpine River Experience: First concept, tying in mountain and river, using a waterdop as the main shape.

02. Adventurous Leader: Symbol of the two mountains from the original logo, giving a more cutting edge adventurous stylisation to it. The larger mountain represents the "leader."

03: Solvig Building: Represents blocks of a puzzle, or a problem needing to be solved ie. How many triangles are in the logo? Also represents building, strong character building.

04: Waterscape: It's a waterscape. Representing Lewis Pass, with the mountains and the river.

Thanks for feedback if you give some!

#1, the water drop idea has been done to death,
#2, feels like im on board the starship enterprise
#3, Leaky penny will love this one, check out the computer game metroid.
#4 is your best bet, but if i was the client i would think that the concept is too similar to what i already have.
I like number 4 but feel it has too many angels, i would like to see a more fluid flowing design, and lose the gradient otherwise you will regret it later.

16 billion colours and you choose the one i cant create !??!

No. 2 Does look like startrek..
I think No. 4 is your best shot, but it needs tuning, why did you choose blue? Its so cold it could also be a refridgerator company..
Agree with Robbie, lose the gradients, make it 1 or 2 colors.

Hey Bureauplus,

Thanks for the link on the mountains, good to see other logos out there and pray there isn't one looking exactly the same!

Colours: The client wanted to use the colours, blue and green, and continued mentioning the fact that it was "alpine" (high mountains, I think it's got to do with ice mountains too) which is one of the main things that need to be portrayed in the logo.

But I do agree, the colours do look abit antarctic, I like the colour I chose for the #3rd one? It's got more of a yellow tinge to it... What do you guys think?

You sure love triangles ey? But ehm, right now you're only developing one idea, which is mountains, and of that we see four variations. Try to step from that and go from another starting point.

Yes make a Alpine logo with a lemon, or a Elephant, that will help.

Wow cool idea!

But.... what I mean is, there are a lot more keywords for this logo then mountain. What about nature, wilderness, tree's, river, outdoor, education, center, sport, climbing, hiking (whatever they teach you) survivaling. Maybe even an animal, like a wolf or bear. Capiche?

#1 Clichéd and boring.

#2 Star trek.

#3 Legend of Zelda.

#4 Generic and lifeless.

Good work on the brief and proposals though. Hopefully we'll see more of these in other submissions.

I forgot to mention Target Market is high school students and community groups.

Thanks for the great feedback, yeah I love creating simple and minimalistic logos, but then it takes away from originality if I find someone using the same or similar logo design. I agree, the first concept is OUT of the picture now, it is overused and teardrop ugly. I'm trying to find the Leaky Penny metroid game thing, where is it?

As far as the client is concerned, they were happy with there current logo, they just needed branding around the logo, but I insisted that we rebrand everything altogether, so I wouldn't be concerned about the logo being too similar to the initial concept.

Thanks again for the feedback, other people in my design class have chosen the "startrek" one, never thought of star trek but I geuss you are right.

I don't want to be spending too much time on the logo as I have more to do, but i'll try do more now quickly!

Thanks guys, much appreciated!

try putting 'legend of zelda tri force' into google images and you will see,
gamers across the world know this one.

The purpose of rebranding effectively is not to completely lose the old brand identity but to make it relevant to 2009 and beyond. Losing the mountain will also lose a recognisable part of this logo. Think carefully before doing that.

If you keep your ears open, you'll see better.

I'm thinking you should put the 2 main ideas together, education and wilderness. How about a book with a mountain coming out of it just tp start with the generics?

Mintsauce's picture

That could actually work pretty well... Flip the book and make it the mountain?

If you keep your ears open, you'll see better.
