Logo design
forever jaded (9 pencils) | Fri, 2011-12-30 19:06I am trying to start my own business part time as a designer and would like a critique of my logo. Because the name is Forever Jaded Designs I wanted to use the infinity symbol as part of the logo. Here I broke it up so you can see the f and the j.

Decent idea. Think you should experiment with different fonts for the mark - the wavy crossbar is not working for me.
I'll work on the crossbar. I thought something was a little off and you're right that is probably it. I'm struggling with the font. I really want something that flares out like the edges of the logo. Any suggestions?
The added edge flare I think will break the unity and flow in your logo. I wouldn't use a texture like that in the logo either, isn't doing anything for me.
The crossbar just looks as if it was created by breaking up a slightly tilted figure eight. It does nothing to enhance the FJ idea.
For now, it would be best if you worked without textures, pillow embossing and so on. The longer you hang out here, the more often you'll hear us encourage logo designers to start black-and-white, because if it doesn't work in B/W, it doesn't work at all. Some of us here disagree, but that's a good rule of thumb.
I'm curious. What's the rationale behind your company's name?
Mara
It is a broken up figure eight which is also the symbol for infinity (forever). The forever jaded describes me to a T.
Do you know the meaning of jaded? Why on earth would you suppose anyone would want a designer who thinks of herself (and, by extension, her potential clients) in such a negative light, without the possibility of change? Conceptual fail.
The infinity symbol is normally rendered horizontally; otherwise, it's just a figure eight.
Mara
Yes I do happen to know the meaning of it. Back to the drawing board I guess. I'm just trying to come up with something that is ME, that I feel comfortable with. Thanks for your help :)
id have to say this calls for an overall reboot.
when i hear "forever jaded" my first thought is some emo jewelery line. i can just hear the tv commercial now "this valentines day, dont kill yourself. show her how truly ambivalent you are with the shriveled heart pendant from kay's jewelers"
i agree with mara that i wouldnt put much faith in a designer who advertised themselves as jaded.
again, if you were maybe a publisher of depressing poetry from high school girls, it might make more sense. or if you only worked with certain types of clients. but for a general designer. i have to call it a questionable idea.
and the mark. though i do like the enthusiasm behind it. it's trying to be too many things. with some tweaking you might be able to make it work. but as it is, i first see an S. then i see an "f-hole" (the hole in the top of a violin / guitar) before i make the f j connection. and when you break the infinity symbol to create the f and j, it totally kills the integrity of the infinity symbol... kind of a catch 22 there.
and yeah. stay away from filters, effects and colors until you have the mark itself better worked out. not to say that you shouldnt be considering those things all along. but nothing screams HOBBYIST louder than an iffy mark with a lot of raster effects applied.
As I stated, I'm just trying to come up with something that isn't already done but fits me. Something that I can personally be comfortable with. My real name, Toni Pearson, is done hundreds of times all over the internet. Toni.com comes up as some sort of internet sex site and typing in Toni Pearson winds up with some bodybuilder. Neither of which I would like to be associated with. Many other versions such as Toni Designs, etc are already taken as well. I'll just go back to the drawing board and try to come up with something else. Thanks again for all your help! Happy New Year :)
As a designer (I'm assuming) it's up to you to believe in your skills and talents to work out a solution that is in fact you. Your name might be in use by others but there's something that makes the work done by you special, work from that. An evasive "well it's been done before" attitude won't yield the right mark for you because you're trying to essentially work around "what's been done (you)".
Gotta' believe in yourself, nothing wrong with self confidence so long as it's not turning into arrogance. Personal logos are the largest nightmare any designer faces so work through it and you'll be incredibly satisfied- it took me 2 months, hundreds of sketches, hours of honest objective critiques to push my idea from something generic into what was actually modeled to "me".
"T.Pear" - logo is a fruit pear. Money in the bank.
Good luck, Toni, and may the new year bring you the perfect inspiration.
Mara
At the risk of banging on about 'jaded' - do you think clients might assume that all your products contain jade.
Really? I mean really? Jaded is defined by Merriam-Webster as being "Exhausted" or "Made dull, apathetic or cynical by experience." So, you just amped up that message by prefacing with the word "Forever" and creating a modified Infinity symbol as it's mark.
Really?
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Sorry but it seems any R.I.P. trenched stuff on blue marble. I don't know anything about your mood and maybe you like this victorian style, just don't know if the people will have empathy with you just only looking this logo.
Maybe a black and white version with a joyful type will appeal us.
yes I'm brazilian xD
Concept is simple & Wow! execution is mmmmm... But Yes! you can use it as wire-frame or blue-print for the logo and start developing around it. I'm sure you will come out with a great logo. Best of Luck!
Thanks!

whatever you end up with in your redesign, please don't emboss and texture it. that looks like you just got photoshop 4 in 1996 and discovered layer effects. it's only missing the drop shadow.
I like the concept I see the F and the J. I would like to see the forever jaded designs in different type formats
