Logo design
I'm working on a logo for a charitative foundation which organizes active travels for both handicapped and not handicapped youth; The foundations name is 'Smarti'.
Their aim is to give young handicapped people a positive feeling about themselves by experiencing adventurous holidays and interacting with the group.
Their current logo (http://www.smarti.nl) is somewhat childish, but does have a real positive feeling about it.
First off I started sketching a little bit to try and get a basic shape which would stand for positivity and an outward bound motion. This resulted in the first pictures > http://www.bartali.nl/smarti/2006_07_09_01.jpg and http://www.bartali.nl/smarti/2006_07_09_02.jpg and a semi-final logo > http://www.bartali.nl/smarti/smarti_logo_01.jpg.
This first attempt was too business-like for the foundation so I went back to the drawingboard...
My second approach was a more natural one. Thinking of travel, outdoor activity and positivity I came up with some rudimentary butterflies > http://www.bartali.nl/smarti/2006_07_09_03.jpg and http://www.bartali.nl/smarti/2006_07_09_04.jpg. Working on the computer I got to a few designs which i quite like.

You can see the progression from lef to right, from top to bottom, with my personal favorite in the bottomright corner :-)
Combining the butterflies with typography - 'S' - resulted in a nice motionlike shape; I wanted the rest of the typography - 'marti' - to kind of match the original logo, so I used a scriptfont.
What do you think? Is the logo legible enough, positive enough? Or do you think it's not good at al?!
I'd like to hear your opinions! :-)

wow
i love the amount of info you've given, the background, the sketches, everything.. just wish everyone gave this much for a good critique.. with that said, i'm leaning towards the bottom left logo, get rid of the smaller butterflies, and rotate the big one that contains the "s" a bit without rotating the S itself. nice work!!
Positive Start
I think you've hit the 'positive' feeling of 'freedom' and travel right on the screws with the butterfly concepts. However, the top left butterfly reminds me a lot of the one for MSN.
The addition of the extra butterflies in the lower designs adds a real feeling of playful interaction and 'flying away'. The current placement slightly interferes with the recognition in the larger two with the overlap. [Maybe add a white line around the biggest butterflies upper right wing]
The color is bright and cheerful but it could be seen as 'baby blue' and 'baby pink' which are associated directly with a boy or girl. The "S" inside the silhouette is a nice touch. However, the one in the lower left looks like an abstract dollar sign to me for some reason. The "S" in the lower right is more natural and free flowing and adds an element of motion. The curls also remind me of a butterfly's antenna.
I really like how you've handled the type selection. The hand drawn feel is slightly imperfect and a beautiful association to the foundation and what they do. I agree that the designs in the lower row are the strongest so far. I'd continue with some additional color options and experimenting a bit more with how to intregrate the "S" into the butterflies while better matching it to the 'feel' in the rest of the logo.
I'm not sure what the tagline says but in some parts of the world they really try to stay away from the word 'handicap'. [It has a negative connotation] They tend to use 'children with disabilities'.
Excellent work and thanks for all of the background information. This is a huge improvement over what they currenlty have and I really like your design process.
Bottom row
The two on the bottom look the best. One color looks better, so I think you should stay away from the CMYK colors see in the other ones. The "S" in the bottom right is really cool, but I fear it might be too complicated. At first I only some some swirling lines. Maybe you could fade back those extra swirls so the S shape stands out just a little more? I also wonder how well it reproduces in smaller sizes.
thank you :-)
Thank you for your opinions...
I will wait a day or so, and have a fresh look at the logo and keep your remarks in mind. The version in the bottomright corner still is the most probable candidate for me, and your posts tell me I'm heading in the right direction.
Experimenting with colors, legibility of the capital 'S' and the placement of the butterflies (the white outline might be a nice solution!) should bring me a bit closer to a final logo :-)
Again, thank you for your comments, very helpfull!
To be continued :-)
A Flash Hit Me
I was walking my 2 yr old daughter tonight when she spotted a dead butterfly in the road. She talked about it all night until bedtime. Her curiousity and love for the little guy gave me an idea. Initially the sketch was just the butterfly with the 'heart' in the wings. She was sitting on my lap when I drew it and she immediately said, "oh, a butterfly". Then I remembered your logo concept and inked in the rest. [If you cover up "Smarti" you'll see the side profile of the butterfly]
It's not really much use to me but maybe you can turn it into something.
Image not showing
Hey Creative NRG...
The image you posted is not showing on my computer...would you mind posting it again. I know this thread is old...but I'm really interested to see what you suggested. Thanks!
Yes, but...
I like the last design Creative_NRG made, that looks like its going somewhere.
But, on the name... what about these guys? That reminds me way to much of them.
