Bottom Logo

Like the design on the bottom, much cleaner... great little work in with the barber pole and the character coming out of the top. I would have to agree with everyone else on the name, not only could it come off as offensive, but if not, it narrows the consumer down to a very targeted group... good work.

Stupid/Offensive Sells

From what I've seen lately, stupid and/or offensive usually sells. A few examples of some very successful restaurants here in the Tempe area are: Pink Taco, Cheba Hut, Chronic Tacos, Heart Attack Grill, Chuck Box, House Of Tricks (They host weddings too), and let's not forget Hooters. Walk into any of these restaurants and you will see them filled with corporate men & women enjoying the food. A lot of their exposure is because of their name.

By "very targeted group" i'm assuming you mean African/Black Americans. According to a quick glance at wikipedia, the estimated African/Black American population is 39,151,870 in the U.S. Was the gym franchise Curves a bad idea because it only catered to women?

I think your client is smart and knows what he's doing with his business name choice. What's the worst that could happen, his business gets featured on the news? Sounds like free advertising to me. Happens all the time here in Tempe. Good job on the logo, I like the bottom one, however try increasing the white stroke width around the text. You could also offset the outside strokes if you are using Illustrator to give it a little depth.
