Logo for Personal Trainer

Hi -
I'm new to the site and just starting to play with graphic design. This mostly involves me fumbling in Illustrator while drinking cup after cup of coffee and dreaming of a day when going to work means walking downstairs in my cow pajamas and putting a cat on my lap.

Anyway, I have a friend who is a personal trainer and he asked me to come up with a logo and a flyer for him. He often trains members of the police department, and those looking to pass physical tests required to become an officer - but not exclusively.

Some things I'm already critical of:
1. Not sure about the text direction switch.

2. I feel like "unlock your potential" runs out a bit on its own. Might be better placed underneath?

3. Without the tag line, the logo doesn't really make sense. But it does make me wish he was a lock smith instead. He resisted my suggestion that he just change professions.

4. Not sure I'm loving Futura, maybe it's just a little fat though.

Any suggestions would be really helpful. Thanks all.

I'm also trying to attach the flyer, so you can see it in context. (Yup, I know I spelled his name wrong in one place. I don't have the original file with me or I'd have changed it before uploading)

hello swym,

First: You need some careful with these "vertical" approaches.
Sometimes you don't have room (height) for them and you'll lose readability if you shrink it.

Second: The logo itself could be more "Sporty" =D

My suggestion: is still maintain the colors for "key" shape and add half-ovals to both borders and create a dumbbell.

but you need to incorporate the letters on the shape, it could be 2D but preferably with perspective to a more refined result you just need to make roughs and roughs =]

finally, separate names from logo, make it horizontal and bottom as should be. =]

yes I'm brazilian xD

Reading the logo itself a exercise.
I'm agree with @qwertyale

I dream of one day not having to walk downstairs to my computer, drink coffee and smoke sigarets with a cat miauwing for food and just go outside, mingle with other people hasting to go to work, let alone reminding myself that the girl behind the counter at the supermarket at 20:55 is the first person I talk to today..

Now on the design:

Nice briefing, although short.
For the logo:
- Why did you choose these rough look fonts?
- I like the color combination, but start in black and white.. works way better.
- Also the vertical doesn't work and the 'rough look' of the initials also dont.

The flyers is nice, but is it single sided?
- I like the photo and colors.
- Why is there 3 x 'Increace the' and not just strenght, agility etc.
- The quote is good: taking the steps litterly, why not do that for the logo also?
- Why the dots behind the qoutes?

Goodluck.

Thanks Querty and ranamaju for the feedback.
Glad we all agree - this one is not working.
I've also pushed Felipe for more guidance - he said that one of his core ideas is that fitness helps us enjoy life more and he tries to help people find the courage to do what they thought they couldn't - whether that is a marathon, or walking up the stairs without losing their breath.
With that in mind, I think that calls for a different treatment - less big muscle man feel - more "fitness is fun, you can do it too"

Time for another cup of coffee and more fumbling....

I liked your energy & positiveness very much. This is the way a creative mind should be. Very Very Best of Luck.

Thanks!

Bureauplus, thanks as well. Your description made me laugh - a dose of reality to my daydream - I forgot the cat would constantly be looking for food, and probably nearly knocking my coffee onto the keyboard as well.

I repeated "increase your" because the people looking to train for the police test need to do that. They already have some strength, some agility, etc. - but they need more to do well on the test.
The dots are periods, but looking again, they do seem really large.

I think once I get more feedback from Felipe, this might be turned into more of a double-sided card (like a 4x6") that he can hand out to clients or potential clients. We'll see where it goes.

Thanks again.

You could try 45 degreeing the logo, but I'm really not minding the vertical logo. It's clean and straightforward. Address possible size issues by laying it out on a card...I could see this cutting across an entire card and bleeding off the edges, with accompanying contact information laid out accordingly...angled or not.

I disagree with the non-grunge for text. I find it dectectivey, but I'm with you on not liking the look with Futura. I would try Aachen or...whatever...a sporty font as recommended by qwertyale with the grungy key/letter cap combo.

Agree with your #2 comment. Unlock your potential looks awkward. I would treat it as a tagline only and only when required. Sometimes a well-done flyer's image selection speaks volumes in what a person does. Your flyer is an excellent start.

Cheers.

If budget allows, I would hit the back of the biz card with that image you're using for the flyer.
Try cropping out a key section of it such as the shoe of the runner catching the step.
