Logo : "Shiwon"
Noble (48 pencils) | Fri, 2008-07-11 05:46Hey,
Here again for another gruesome critique again !!!!(!) Ive been bouncing back and forth with summer projects and touching up on my portfolio pieces before i gear back up for school. And i wanted to accomplish some sort of identity for myself. Its been a challenge thus far but i still have the pedal floored!
Update :: i started out with my initials "SD" which represents my first and last name. There were options to stray away from initials and play around with my full name considering i have more options to play around with and fun as well. So heres what i have so far in my sketch book attached with a couple of others !

The sketches are great. Using your initials as a logo isn't exactly original, though.

Thanks for the comment, This is my 3rd critique and im focusing on my full name as of right now though nato. Im aware from others that using my full name would be a good idea. Sorry for not stating in my previous post earlier. But i just want you guys thoughts and opinions on it.
If some of you are confused on which sketch to critique on, its the the 4 bigger ones. The smaller sketches were some rough ideas that i was playing around with and you guys and can give me some insight on those as well.
Good work on sticking to the basics. Your sketches look nice, and I think the name Shiwon has potential. What you want to do is identify a few keywords that would describe you and your art, your designs, philosophy etc. You want your logo to have a personality of sorts. Kepp skecthign though dude these are looking good!
P.S. Don't forget K.I.S.S.!

Penny,
First thanks for the help. Members here at creative and yourself urge that i go forward with using my first name. Ill keep pushing for personality that identifies myself, its been a challenge thus far.
P.s. Im trying not to be stupid haha
I vaguely remember a Shiwon concept being submitted for critique in the past.
I think that it's great that you're sketching ideas on paper first instead of heading right to the computer.
These all look techy and sharp except for a few. Almost all of the ones that Shiwon is completely written out remind me of old rock bands with sharp lettering, like KISS or Metallica. Not that they directly resemble, but the angles definitely make me think of that.
In my opinion, you should definitely stick with Shiwon, and not use SD. SD has many connotations already, and Shiwon is more memorable.
I'm not sure I can say I would use any of your sketches, though -- they don't seem like they would be used long-term, and many are hard to read. Perhaps asking yourself some questions about your company would help you decide an identity to represent that company. This is a good resource, and I've seen others like this on the web. Ultimately you want something that will represent you and your work. I'm not saying it's easy, either -- most designers will tell you the hardest logo they've done is their own. (And I don't even have one, myself.)
Hope that helps. :) Keep it up.

stephanie hit on an important point: legibility. i think you're trying to hard to make it funky and losing one of the more important parts of design (especially logo design): it has to communicate. and for a logo, it has to communicate your company name in its full form. so you have to make it legible. your mark can be funky, but the words have to be legible.
Thanks again for the replies. I will continue to keep pushing forward with this project. You guys have given me some good tips that i will explore!
Stay TUNED.
