looking for a good way to get rid of book gutter black

For instance. Scan a two page book. The gutter center will end up dark to black. Is there a known technique to even this out to the pages natural color ??

Photoshop. Use a Levels and Layer mask just the offending area. You can use the vertical blend mode to soften the edges as they go out from the center. Use levels to remove the black.

if we have to print a book and the customer doesn't have the files for some reason, we trim off the spine and scan the now-loose pages, then straighten them with the ruler tool in photoshop, then Edit, Rotate, Arbitrary then we either use an action, pre-setup to use the same curve modification, or we go in and manually change the curves for each page, then clean up the text with the "median" noise filter if there's anything left after that we clean it up with the eraser tool I might be forgetting a step, but that's the basics anyway
