Lucy Limanni Photography Logo
Leaky Penny (2616 pencils) | Wed, 2010-01-13 04:54Hey kids,
Here's a logo I'm doin' for a photographer friend. I started sketching tonight to get some kind of direction and concept going.
I started off with getting some basic stuff that were nagging me ( i.e. tetris theme, double Ls and others) Once I got that out of my system, I went into word association mode and came up with a few ideas. Polaroids, tripods, shutter eyes and flashes were things that came to mind.
She does both paintings and photography, focuses more on photography so I'm focusing more on that aspect too. It'd be a little too much to try and put that all in a logo.
I came up with one concept of Light. Light plays a big role in photography, and it so happens to be the origin of her name in Latin.
The sketches are loose and some border on the useless, but I needed to purge some of those ideas out of my mind. I have a few notes and stuff that just came to mind as I was going, I never paused so there's some rather loose ideas in there.
Anyways, should I focus on the "Light" theme? Should I go with something more typography based? I have three treatents using her signature that I can upload too, but let's see how these go first.
Also, I'm sorry to say there are no penises or lens flares in these concepts...yet.

I'm digging Option 3...white on black. Not sure why you have the ink splog effect on the other ones... The logo looks a little bit like a wedding service or something to that effect...
I like the fact that you put down your development of the concept... Very helpful. Cheers!
Yeah, I figured showing a bit of the process would help people see what goes into brainstorming. I think it's important to put down whatever goes through your mind. Ideas and concepts sprout from the most inane thoughts sometimes.
The splog effect is totally aesthetic. The signature is hand made by her, I thought the splog would back up that idea.
you're right about the wedding service look. Then again, it could look like a variety of things too. I just put it there cause I didn't want to use a font. I still have a few pages of sketches I want to sift through that I'll post up soon.
It's all about the thought process! I won't jump onto the computer until the very last stage.

Dude, you are the fucking MAN.
Like the signature look, i would love to see it with a sepia feel, to enhace the photo aspect.
Have you thought about a hand holding a paint brush painting a camera?
looking great, love seeing the thought process ,
Great work.
16 billion colours and you choose the one i cant create !??!
love the image of the camera with the light bulb over it!
the concept of a light bulb as "idea" or creativity is SOOO played out, but the way you use it gives it new life.
some good stuff here ; )
Hi Leaky,
I don't know if you are open to rough suggestions =P

but remember, don't make it so easy. this could be just your start point.
try to go forward or deconstruct or make with creative fonts.
do not disappoint us.
don't come with two helvetica caps "L"
xD

I think we should start a qwerty fanclub, that was genius, I love it.
We could all have matching IHA t-shits. :)))

Might have to order that one.

I think you could make a staggled version too
do not put so close as the foto above.
a wide format could be great nowadays.
you can rotate the square too. infinite times. the logo could be used at any rotating degrees =D
I'm just curious because maybe it seems good with a little fingers/hand gesture shape WITH LINES than typying.
only the roughs could tell us the better choice

I'm liking the stack of polaroids....work with it.
Well this is refreshing! Love the cursive. Love the camera. Love the stacked Polaroids. Cursive is the winner though.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
The last ones on your post(the signature) is unreadable.
I like the signature too, it's classy and low key. Very subtle. I have to play around with the font, I need something that doesn't look so "pasted on" Also, at smaller sizes, you lose it.
I like the polaroids too. The camera with the light bulb might be pushing it a little too much, like too much symbolism in one logo. I'll see if anything can be thought up.
I really want to push the idea of light. i don't know, it just seems there's an idea there somewhere.
Serverjohn, are all three signatures unreadable?

Leaky, I had the same problem as Serverjohn unfortunately.
The second L just looks too much like an S.
I had to check back in the sketches and brief to double check what the name was supposed to be.
The first L looks S-like too but from the other letters you work out it's an L.
No such luck with the surname.
Liking the 2-L-framed-picture idea...
I like the 2 L's placed together just without the tetris thingy, spacing them out may get a camera shutter Idea out of it, or maybe the lucy on the tripod the L could be squared for a camera effect? possibly with the light bulb on top I'd love to see where those go, I also love the random sketches everywhere, your a very good pencil sketcher
Looking for some inspiration on logopnd, I thankfully don't have to compete with many light bulb ideas or polaroid ideas.

Edit: Type in photography.

Great work with the sketches, I love to see the thought processes that go into making a logo. I always present my first ideas to a client as scamps, I find it much more productive as they are looking at the ideas, and not dismissing a logo purely because they don't like my colour choices or font styles. I think it also makes the client feel involved in the process, so much so that they often get out a pencil themselves and we have a brainstorm.
So many ideas here, I like the hands holding 'lucy', also the stacked polariods, but I'm not sure about the monkey!
If Lucy's photography is quite edgy the james bond one might work, but I'm not sure.
The signature logo at the bottom doesn't read as Lucy Limanni, more like Sucy Simonn, but I think this is the route you should take, understated, classy, just make those L's more readable.
Remind me never to come to your house for dinner! Spaghetti, cheese and cat food, yum yum.
living on dreams and custard creams.
Nah, the monkey was lurking around when I was trying to put serious thought into the Light concept, he's in no way part of any logo!
I could aways get her to alter her signature a bit, it looks more like Lucy Simanni.
Yeah, dinner at my place is always a grand adventure!

Qwerty's idea rocks. Of course you'd have to reverse the hand positions so you'd get an upside right L and then the upside down one. The bonus effect would be she'd get every lesbian client in town.
PS: Don't recognize that medium you're working in, Leaky - is that the new Snow Leopard OS?
Oh no no, it's the new Graphite OS. Never crashes, never needs to be updated, no need to reformat, it's fantastic!

That looks like a really, really cool concept...unfortunately I wouldn't feel right using it as it is someone elses idea, but I do appreciate the feedback!

Hey Leaky, thanks.
But why you do not feel right to use it as it my idea. Its just a draft, you have to improvise it. Jacob Metius got the idea but Galileo Galilei invented the telescope. If Galileo felt it wrong telescope might not be invented.
What I feel creativity improves by passing through creative filters (minds). You are not stealing the idea. Any creative mind can get stuck with some project sometime after several hour of brainstorming and go round and round with it. But a fresh eye can see it in a different perspective as it is all new to him. That's it, nothing inglorious about it.
Why can't you think we are all an agency here and it a project for the agency not for an individual, so anyone can come up with the IDEA. This way the end Product will be more beautiful & constructive.
cool d-!-b
Thanks!

Well, maybe if you suggested an idea like qwerty, I could work from that. but you kinda just did it all for me! I'm grateful, don't get me wrong, but you took all the fun out of it!
Maybe I could use the general idea but the one you presented looked fantastic as is.

and this is why we dont draft up ideas for others.
Hi there. I like the two L concept and coming from a photography background myself, I understand these sort of logos. I would be careful of a couple of things though...
Firstly, if the L's get too close, they may start to resemble Venture Portraits generic square logo and you want to avoid that as they are associated with high costs, nothing any photographer wants.
I've not had a chance to look into who she is and her style of photography but signature based photography logos do have a tendency of looking like wedding or traditional portraiture photographers logos... Raymond Thatcher and Hills and Saunders being two prime examples if you can find them. They are both Buckinghamshire or Berkshire based in the UK.
When I designed my logo for my wedding business, I wanted to keep it clean, modern and contemporary to resemble the photography I shoot (Website down at the moment but I will try and get it on here when I am home or you can email me and I'll send it).
I would avoid the camera, light, lens thing as again, I have looked at so many photographers in my time and the one thing I have noticed is these sort of things can be related to more traditionalist styles of photography. If this is what she does though, then role with it.
You should have a look at "The Image is Found" if you want contemporary photography inspiration, their logo is quite interesting. They are an American based photography company.
