Finder window corner icon

If you ever wondered what those little icons meant in bottom left corner of the Finder window here is the answer.

Finder window corner icons

They tell you if the Snap to grid option is turned on or off. The 4 tiny folders (right) mean it's off and the grid (left) means it's on.

Now, the only thing left me wondering is if this space is reserved to give feedback about this feature, why not make it an active switch. It would be much easier to just click this tiny icon to toggle between the two states than pressing Apple-J and selecting the option it in the palette that comes up.

The four little folders don't mean that Snap to grid is turned off but that you've chosen Keep arranged by Name/Date Modified/Size...
But you're right in a way since you can't have Keep arranged by... and Snap to grid at the same time. So when the little folders appear, Snap to grid is turned off.
In fact there's also a third icon : the trash icon that appears only for... the Trash folder. I think it just tells you that it's a very special folder.

Thanks for the clarification. Never noticed the little trash icon. It's cute. :)

And there is another one I found (no explanation needed):

Hmm...

I wonder which prefs I need to tweak to see those bottom-left icons.

I don't see them in any of my 10.4.1 Finder windows.

EDIT: Ahh...nevermind. I got it sussed.

Only visible in icon mode. They wouldn't make sense in the other two modes anyway.

I don't see them either. I'm running 10.4.1 also. Are the screen shots above from Tiger, or Panther?

Hi there,

I'm using Tiger and didn't see them at first either. Not until I clicked on an application or folder icon did they appear.

lol I tried to click it to toggle it, but as reading further suggests..it does no good.

Would be cool if those were toggle-able, and included other switches so you could click on a folder, and change it's permissions, making it private/hidden, etc.

(I still wish I could change file permissions w/o Terminal and still using the 3-digit sequence. The 3 drop down menus are too much IMO)

You're seen as perfectly normal with you Mac obsession here. :)

Now, you just need to add an avatar (picture). You can upload it under "my account" / edit.
