Google Talk

Google doesn't like Mac users. We are always second priority. Google Talk has been launched with a Windows only application. But, you can setup your iChat or Adium to use the IM function for the time being. You need to use your gmail account to set it up. If you don't have one yet, just ask! We've got tonns of invitations. Here are the instructions for setting up with iChat and Adium.
I'd like to see when Skype, iChat or Google Talk finds its way to mobile phones, so that I can use them without carrying a Mac along.
I added a field in member profiles for Google Talk, go fill it out if you want. Pls. recommend what's the best way to share your account. I guess giving away the gmail address publicly is not a good idea.

I think that Google’s entrance into this area is interesting and they do always bring some new tricks to the party but I'm getting a bit fed up with the proliferation of instant messaging.
The whole point for me is being able to speak to ALL of my friends from one app. For this to happen everyone I know needs to be on same network. I really don't want half a dozen IM apps open at the same time clutering up my machine.
Surely there must be some way to standardise the IM networks so that the networks can speak to each other?

Convergence. I got this error on my account.
"Could not connect to Jabber. Could not connect to server:talk.gmail.com"
Did anybody have this error in iChat or it's just me? :(
Just defined a Jabber account using Fire and it worked too..

Awesome! A new IM service with nobody I know on it! I'm going to use this every day so I can't talk to anybody. Ah, peace and quiet. Thanks Google!
Seriously, what's the point? Everybody I know is on AIM, so why on earth would I (or anyone) use Google Talk? Was there really any demand for this at all? And there's no way in hell I'm posting my email address out in the clear.
What were they thinking?
Used port 80 from Adium and it seems to work too (no friends on the network yet). Try to put 80 instead of 5222!!
EDIT: I wouldn't mind trying out Google Talk since MSN is almost always screwy on Mac's... Hopefully Google Talk wouldn't disappoint!
This might be another chance for a transcontinental chat program like MSN to flourish. Other than that, I don't know.
Oh and Ivan, you can use AIM on phones already if you weren't aware.

AIM to voice talk or chat? I know MSN chat is on GPRS. I want Skype on my phone!
AIM to chat. Hmm Skype on the phone would be sweet.

I like its integration with gmail.
There ARE too many chat things...and I agree that there should be 1 network, even if there are numerous clients that allow you to connect to it.

i never understood why we need so many networks.. 1 netowrk would be just great..
that's never going to happen but here's what Google says:
"...We believe Internet communication networks should openly interoperate, and that they should include IM and voice. The openness of the Google Talk service to XMPP clients is just a start. We like SIP too, and we want to also federate between servers. We've already started working with our friends at EarthLink and Sipphone to federate our respective real-time communications services so all our users can talk to each other for free. If you're interested in federating with us or would like to interoperate in a way that we have not yet implemented, let us know."

It has no special features or anything for those of us who use Macs... I'm dissapointed. :c(

It's ok OK to have different competing IM systems. The key is they need to "talk" to each other. Much like AOL and iChat. There are many email protocols and applications, but they all understand each other. Except for the inconsistent implementation of HTML email of course.
