Make your file jump to the top
Ivan | Wed, 2007-05-02 13:01When in Finder you're working with a long list of files organized alphabetically you can add a simple space in front of the first character of the file name to make it jump to the top. This can be a simple file organization method that doesn't affect spotlight's search results.

do this with all your folders so that they stay on top for easy navigation
I am working in a mixed PC/Mac environment. It is really frustrating to deal with Mac file names on PC when people use special characters in file names. Trailing space is one of the scenario that is asking for trouble. Underscore in fine for this purpose, and is legal in both Mac and PC.
sometimes I put a * in front of a filename or directory i use a lot.
^ one can only hope you're joking.
categorized as beginner tip! :)
Every now and then if I'm working on a web project with a lot of files and folders, I'll put an underscore before the name of folders I want to see at the top. That way things like _images, _css, _scripts, _includes, and others folders don't get lost amidst content and section folders. Just don't go putting a * in a filename on apache though. :)
having not owned a mac in a few years (sadly, but my next is DEFINITELY a mac again!) i'm slightly confused about this idea...
with that said, how come i've never had a need for my folders/files to "jump to the top"? is it just that i have it well sorted in folders/sub-folders already? or am i missing something?
curiosity i suppose.
