Measuring pixels
Ivan | Thu, 2005-05-26 11:50If you have developer tools installed from the Tiger CD you can find some juicy little examples provided by Apple for developers.
One of my favourite is the Grid widget. It's simply a draggable Grid which helps you measure any element on your screen. Since Dashboard gives a semi transparent background you can see what's below, hence you can measure it with this Widget. Essential for web designers.
If you don't don't like to install the Developer tools just for this widget you can download it below. For those who have not yet shifted to Tiger, I recommend xScope. For Windows please recommend.

Very cool Ivan and even cooler NetNewsWire recognised the attachment in the RSS feed and asked me did I want to download it. Safari might get put to the back of the Applications folder just like Sherlock.

I'm running xScope in Tiger and i find it more helpful than the Grid widget. Though you do have to pay for it, I feel it's worth every dollar.
Konfabulator will do it for Windows.
And Mac, come to think of it.
Hmmm, I had the developer tools for panther, but I don't have it anymore. I'm having trouble finding the developer tools download on apple.com. Do you have to be a select member?

You'll have to grab them off the Tiger DVD instead.
Usually when I'm trying to figure out the dimensions of something, it's within a browser window. When I have to be accurate I just printscreen and figure it out in Photoshop, but if I just need a rough estimate, I'll use the Ruler 1.2 Bookmarklet from Centricle.com. I keep a folder of handy bookmarklet/favelets in my Firefox bookmark toolbar folder for quick and easy access. ...It's the same process whether I'm working on mac or pc.
Users of Tiger could alternatively download the ruler widget.
I really like the ruler in Art Directors Toolkit.
