Refine your search in Spotlight

spotlight kind

If you know exactly what category of files you're looking for with Spotlight you can refine your search by simply typing kind:"category" after the string you're searching for. For example you may look for images that contain the word apple by typing: apple kind:images.

Here is a table of all the keywords available for you to use:

Applications	kind:application, kind:applications, kind:app
Contacts	kind:contact, kind:contacts
Documents	kind:document, kind:documents
Folders	kind:folder, kind:folders

Allow me to add the following, pasted from a post I made on the MacMinute forum. This was in response to a Forum visitor who hasn't yet moved to Tiger, and was a little unclear about the wide-ranging scope of Spotlight's searching capabilities:

Open up a Finder window with Command + F, click on "Other..." in the dropdown menu for attributes to search for and you get a wealth of options:
