Share any folder or volume

If you are not happy with only the Public folder available for sharing read further. Here is the most simple way to do it with a scary looking but sweet little application.
You need to download Sharepoints, which comes in two flavours. The download package includes a standalone application that you can just drop into your Applications/Utilities folder or a control panel which you can drop into your ~/Library/PreferencePanes folder to make it available from the System Preferences.

- Open either the application or the preference pane.
- Choose the "Normal" Shares tab.
- Add a Share Name that can be anything you want the other party to recognize your shared folder as.
- Select the folder or volume you want to share by clicking the Browse... button.
- Select the AFS option if you work in a Mac environment.
- Hit the bottom right button to update or add your new Share. (You will need to enter your admin password.)
The last thing you need to do is set the permissions you want your shared folder function as. For guest users you need to adjust the dropdown menu titled Everyone. Here are the different options you can choose:
- r/w -means the guest can read and write the folder, full access.
- r -means the guest can only read the folder, like your Public folder.
- w -means the guest can only write the folder, like your Dropbox.
- none -means that guests can't access the folder only registered users can.
If you change the settings, you need to click the Update Share button again.
Now you can test it from your collegue's machine and you should see the newly set-up shared folder. In the example above it's called Work besides the regular Public folder called ivan.

I've been using this app for a few years now and it couldn't be simpler to set up. It's perfect for mixed OS environments.

I've been thinking about this actually for the past few days ... will this pref allow me to choose who can put stuff in my folder (sounds dirty)?
i'd like to get a pop-up or something when someone tries to send me something ... which I have to say accept or decline to.
Dropbox notification will partially solve your request.
What I did at work as a means of sharing my archives was to create a new user and set up the Sharepoints prefs so that people logging in remotely with this user name & password could read and write files from that shared directory...
I gave the user name & password to only the people that needed to be in there- works like a charm across about half a dozen machines & OS's...
This basically works as Windows does, where you can right-click on any directory and have it shared on the network. Something I believe OSX needs to have built-in, IMO...

So will this work with WIN/MAC as there is an old G4 in the backroom I'd like to use as a mp3 dump?
I can see the machine on the company network via the WIN PC and the G4 but cannot connect. Any help on this topic's appreciated.

We just recently set this app up on the video editing network here at school, and it's proven very useful to the video majors. It's not really necissary on the NetBoot systems we have set up for the primary Mac labs, but for the smaller video editing network it's quite useful.
