Weather widget location validation

I guess it's Widget week on cb. If you don't have Tiger or despise Widgets hold on. The week is almost over. :)

I was struggling for some time to get the Weather widget working for my city. I realize that I live at the end of the world, but I didn't want to give up.

After some fiddling around I realized that I needed to enter the city name and press return to start a validation process. If there are several countries with that same city name you will be presented with a list, so that you can select the correct one. Hope this helps some of our international readers to get their Weather widget working.

Oh man, you have no idea how happy this makes me. I had switched back to Konfabulator just because I couldn't get the weather for my city... and now, I can. Woo! (But I still love Konfabulator... And now it's free too!)

Daring Fireball has the scoop on it:

One of the core principles of UI design is that you should never allow for invalid or ambiguous input. In the case of the Weather widget, validation should happen as-you-type (a la Google Suggest), and the Done button should only be enabled after the input field has been validated.

I can't agree more. This GUI design flaw led to weeks of frustration for me.
