Looks like 10.3.9 is out! Feel free to share your experiences on upgrading. I'll let you know how mine goes shortly.

i'm holding out..

I know of at least one person who had his machine jacked up by this update...

That would be me. :)I

That would be me. :)

I couldn't launch Safari 1.3 after the update. It was a conflicting plug-in called AcidSearch. Once I deleted it, Safari was fine.

I, also reverted back to Safari 1.2 but, any site that had a good amount of Java crashed Safari. So the solution there is to install the lastest Security Update again.

Safari Shortcuts Changed? :s

View source shortcut keys have been changed since update to 3.9

GRRRRR!! I upgraded to 3.9 before i read about these problems on the forums i wish i didnt now... I cant say ive have any problems (and i better not get any problems lol, this 20" iMac is only a month or so old lol)

Any one know how to change shortcut keys in safari? im so used to pressing option+cmd+v and now i've gotta stretch to option+cmd+u :(

zwei's picture

YES!, as a matter of fact I do ;)

Panther has a really cool feature that most people probably don't know about. You can assign key commands to lots of apps (not all apps) by going into your System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts (last tab)

Here's how you would change the Safari shortcut for viewing source back to Command+Option+V

1. Click the little + tab at the bottom left of the shortcut's pane

2. Choose safari in the drop-down application list

3. Enter the name of the Menu item you want to shortcut into the "Menu Item" field ...in your case it would be "View Source" (careful, everything must be entered exactly as it appears in the menu ...I'm almost positive it's case sensative, and if you see "..." after the name you will also need to enter that into the box as well (i.e. "Add Bookmark...") By the way, the "..." at the end of a menu item just lets you know that it will open up another input box upon selection. Those menu items without the "..." will not need further input.

4. Click inside the Keyboard Shortcut box and then press the desired key command (i.e. Command+Option+V)

5. Click Add, and you are done!

NOTE: You will need to restart the application you just created the shortcut for before it will take effect.

I have created shortcuts in Safari and in QuarkXpress ...Adobe apps do not work with this method, but that's not really a problem because they give you control over the shortcuts anyway.

No problem!

I'll wait for Tiger..

I'll wait for 10.4.0 instead , I had bad experience with 10.3.8 so I'll wait 2 weeks and go directly to Tiger..

The conspiracy theory

I heard an interesting theory that made me go hmm.
The jist of it is that the last OS update(patch) before the release of a new version of an OS is riddled with bugs to make you want to upgrade.

Think there is any truth to that?

Ivan's picture

far fetched idea

I don't think that would take Apple very far. :)

Quicktime

From what I have heard you'll need 10.3.9 to get Quicktime 7 installed

Oh so apple gonna fix QT 7 for Panther

Oh so they gonna fix a version of QT 7 for Panther?
I thought you were supposed to have Tiger for that purpose..

zwei's picture

Yeah

they will definitely at least get the playback ability ...dunno if you can encode H.264 from Panther QT though.

Updated mine today!

All seems okay too, but then it's not been too long! I have noticed that my extra 'Safari New Button' has been lost, but I'll soon have that installed again.
Anyone use 'Safari New Button'? (Should be called Safari New Tab!) Apple missed that little trick!

I bought another TWO G5 1.8 DP ten days ago and have missed the free OS updates... How happy am I? Grrrr!

zwei's picture

Why not just hit Command+T ?

The reason the tab button got deleted is because 10.3.9 brings a whole new version of Safari with it. (v1.3) ...this version brings tons of compatibility enhancements and a significant speed boost as well. It is essentially the same version of Safari that will be shipping with Tiger, minus the RSS capabilities. The Tiger version will still be a little faster due to other system enhancements, but this is a very good upgrade to the browser.

You can read notes on the new Safari directly from the Author's Blog

Dunno if they will release a stand-alone Safari install or not. So think twice about not updating to 10.3.9 (although waiting a week may be good advice ...even though I never do ;)

Amazing

It's really not just a bug fix! It's amazing how they manage to make the max out of the hardware. I wish Safari had a A9 toolbar and a Developer toolbar like FF has.

zwei's picture

I'm sure it's possible!

Just look at PithHelmet ...there is a plugin architecture built into Safari ....just need to get some people writing them ;)

I'm sure an A9 toolbar, etc, would definitely be feasable. Maybe Safari 3.0 will expand the plug-in capabilities to something similar to what FF has.

I upg'ed, mostly because of the fix for people with loads of fonts having a slow startup time. My startup time is quicker, but my desktop spazzed out a little bit ago. My icons moved themselves around, and I couldn't in any way select them. I didn't try through the finder, I just restarted, and it hasn't recurred yet.

If you look closely...

...you'll see that text boxes now color according to the css tags. Buttons and such still stay aqua though.
