Magazine flatplan template
iestynx (74 points) | Fri, 2008-11-21 11:11Does anyone know where I can get a template for a magazine flatplan? I know I could make one, but time is against me.
Or is there another solution out there? I've come across www.blinkplan.com but the project is going to stretch over the 30 day trial.
What solutions are out there? What do you use to collaborate on this whilst being away from the rest of the team?
Thanks

It depends what job you want the flat plan to do and how much detail need go into it.
I've tended to use them for very rough page planning). Working out where articles and adverts go rather than specific page layouts.
For this I just lay-out rough rectangles in illustrator and drag them into place to form however many pages I require (I've known people to do this in PowerPoint too). To edit it nothing beats pencils and pen. I tend to take several print-outs into the initial content meetings and scribble notes on each one. After that I may re-draw it or annotate the plan to circulate it around the relevent group.
I've always started with pen and paper, then gone to the computer in InDesign and created rectangles for the pages. I also get paper and create a small rough dummy of the magazine and write in on the pages what goes where. (I cut 8.5x11" paper in half, fold in half.)
It takes no time at all-

I used to do that too - it's very handy and gives you a real feel for the flow of the magazine. I'll have to start instituting that again. Thanks!
Sometimes, printing companies that specialize in magazine printing have such templates for their clients. Is there any way you could take advantage of that?
