Magazine Layout
BmBeards (40 pencils) | Sat, 2011-09-24 07:23A sample piece that will be sent to a possible contract client.
It is a two page layout for a local snowboard magazine. The article is going to be on a local snowboarder who lives in Snowmass CO, and on the history of Snowmass itself.
The magazine is VERY non-traditional. The Art Director just wanted to see if I could come up with something fast that fit with the style of the magazine before giving me some overflow work. I know it's hard not knowing the magazine or style, but any critiquing always helps!
If you guys need more info, to help critique that I may have forgotten, since I have had zero sleep lol, let me know :)
Thanks everybody for your thoughts!

Progressive, dynamic.
Love it.
Love it!! Great use of the Typography! And spot colors
its pretty. but i dont really connect a bunch of diagonal bars with snowboarding culture. seems gratuitous to me.
and btw, nrivera. those arent "spot colors"
It's cool, it's interesting. Ship it out. I like.

Mara
dude, are you trying to chat up a girlie?
WEAK.
; )
Thanks for the support guys and gals! Keep those fingers crossed... getting sick of Romen Noodles lol
looks good but i feel the image behind the blue bars is not necessary. a flat color or some vector pattern(not very detailed) might be a better choice.
+1. Actually with all the shadows and stuff going on the image could be replaced by some pattern or some shapes. Give it a go. I love how it looks now but just for the sake of experimenting.
totally agree with u hof...th second page aint jelling up 4 me. Lyk th quarkiness though....
The layout is decent, there's a few problems
- Snow Mass title is extremely boring fontwise, and the connecting W-M doesn't read well
- left page has a lot of wasted space that could be filled with art or flavor photos
- The time-lapse grid on the right is very nice. But there's so little space between them that the photo behind it is barely legible. I'd use something else there.
the more i look at this. the less i like it. the verticality of the bars in the blue photo sort of struggle with the diagonals everywhere else.
i wonder what would happen if you used sort of a fan for the separations rather than simple verticals? it might contrast more with the diagonals AND draw attention to the timelapse "stages"...
just thoughts
Design aesthetics aside - it doesn't say "snowboarding" to me.
