Magic Mice

Have to say these magical mice are pretty darn cool. First time I saw them, my initial reaction was Apple totally blew it by making the mouse too complicated - but they got this one right. I've used everything out there - tablets, track balls, two button mice, the ones with the little scroll balls on top - everything - and nothing ever topped the standard one button mouse as far as I was concerned. But this thing is downright COOL. The two finger swipe seemed a little uncomfortable when I saw it in the store, but one finger works fine and is not uncomfortable at all. Add in the zoom, the inertia scroll, the programmable right click (without the extra button!), etc... etc... and Apple has a real winner imho. On a huge monitor (I'm on a 30" now) - it's practically mandatory that you have one of these things.
As always... jmho.

Be warned! Working in Illustrator & InDesign with the magic mouse is quite tricky. It seems the canvas just flys off the screen.

Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
You're right caoimghgin.
The screen zinging off here there and everywhere in Illustrator used to get on my nerves...BIG TIME!
I installed Better touch Tool; http://blog.boastr.net/
Which solved the problem.
Allows you to program extra gestures as well. Such as three finger press to open an link in a new tab in Safari.
I had the same trouble and fixed it with MagicDriver: http://plentycom.jp/en/magicdriver/

Can't wait to try it. Awesome.

ergonomically, its like every other apple mouse since about 1988 - a complete train wreck

Just wondering, does it work on Windows?

well I read a lot of bad issues for Magic Mouse ergonomics... I think apple mouses are good only for people with fat hands xD
Still I don't like to move battery powered mices because they weight a lot for my hands.
I bought the Magic Trackpad and think Apple STILL needs to rethink all about ergonomics for pointers:

The way I think Apple could sell it:

i have yet to like any apple mice. and their real failures have been abject failures. anyone remember the round puck?
it's hard to believe how much they've screwed up mice when they do so well at other designs.
i can't understand how long it took them to have more than one button. context sensitive mouse buttons make so much sense.when i worked in other people's design offices as a freelancer, i used to carry my own logitech mice with me so i didn't have to use apple mice.
Interesting. Especially the ergonomics angle. I've been on Macs since 1984 and haven't had so much as a twitch, whereas all the people who go the "ergonomic" route seem to be the ones wearing the wrist supports because of carpal tunnel. Most ergonomic mice (pads, etc...) make you lift your hand or wrist off the table - I never liked that position. Qwerty - the way you turned your pad around would drive me up the wall. I like my palm on the table with the mouse in between my thumb and middle finger - the Apple mouse is perfect for that position.
not sure what you mean about lifting your hand/wrist off the table. i'm using an ergonomic logitech as i type this. with my hand on the mouse, the bottom right part of my palm is resting on the desk and the thumb pad of my palm brushes the desk as i move the mouse. thumb is in the thumb slot built into the mouse, forefinger on MB1, middle finger on MB2, ring and pinky finger resting on the desk.
I'd have to see the actual mouse of course, but from your description it sounds like one of those mice where your thumb is locked into a curved slot on the side. So far as ergonomics, I've always felt the more freedom you have to position the hands naturally - the less problems you'll have (at least it's worked that way for me - not speaking for everyone obviously). By having any kind of slot the fingers have less freedom of movement - which also limits the hand and wrist movement as well. That was always my experience with any mouse that had an odd shape - it always felt unnatural.
The (ergonomic) drawback to two button mice (btw) is they require more stretching of the fingers - you're basically reaching forward with the two fingers to click the buttons - which is not required on a standard one button Apple mouse. The left/right clicks on a two button mouse give you the same results as the option or command key on a Mac and my fingers are naturally resting there anyway.
The part about having the hand lifted refers to ergonomic extras like the pad in qwerty's photo - you rest the wrist on the pad which lifts it up and (imho) adds more pressure in the exact area you're trying to relieve it - the wrist. Reversing the track pad also forces your hand to extend over the raised end of the track pad and down - a further stretch than the correct position - slanted towards the user.
Of course a lot plays into it besides the mice and pads - your height for example. I'm 6'3" living in a world created for 5'11" people - so every chair out there is uncomfortable imho - and the way my arm lies in proportion to a standard desk height is going to be different than the way a shorter (or taller) person's arm naturally lies. So I don't believe there is a blanket solution for everyone - some products will work better for different people and some won't work at all. Doesn't mean your throw the baby out with the bath water. But - again - 26 years and counting working on a computer everyday and not so much as a twitch. I must be doing something right. :)
"reaching forward to click with the two fingers?"
i don't reach anywhere. i just press down where they rest.
you're right, as far as desks/chairs go, but chairs are adjustable, to an extent, so that your arms rest naturally.
and pretty much the same time frame for me with the mouse, even longer with the computer itself (pre-mouse). and same lack of issues.
still, i think it's a big leap to say the apple mouse has better ergonomics than the others. you don't see a lot of people adding apple mice on PCs, but you do see a lot of people adding non-apple mice to their macs. and i don't think it's just because people who use PCs dislike apple so much or that the mice are more expensive (and when it comes to the high-end logitech mice, they're really just as, if not more, expensive).
i maintain that apple doesn't have the best track record with their mouse designs (and some spectacular failures to boot). it's a segment of their market that they've been far less successful with.
Well don't go putting words into my mouth now, G - I never said the Apple mouse was more ergonomic. My statement was that I (personally) like the Apple mouse better than the others.
But I will say the only "Mac" people I know using third party mice are the ex-PC guys who can't live without those extraneous buttons. I also think for a serious comparison you'd have to add in the people who have switched computer systems as well (since they'd be switching mice in the process - at least temporarily if not permanently). Then Apple wins hands down because nobody switches from Mac to PC, but millions upon millions have switched from PC to Mac. That's a well known totally indisputable carved-into-stone undeniable fact. :-)
i'll just say we obviously know a very different set of apple users, then. ;)
Something much better than this coming from Microsoft soon!

Still talking about wrong Apple ergonomics, I bought this thing and I'm very pleased. It makes both cooling and avoid my wrists to pressure the sharp edges of macbooks

You don't need to use the adesives on macbooks, they are needed for other notebooks without clear surfaces.

speaking of ergonomics, this looks interesting. It may be a gaming mouse but I still want to try one for my graphics work. Soooo many adjustments!
