Mail Attachment problem.
matt sweitzer (9 pencils) | Thu, 2008-01-03 18:41I'm having a problem with mac mail on our mac mini. It keeps crashing when it tries to display the preview image of mail with attachments.
Has anyone else experienced this problem?
The machine is running Tiger version 10.4.11, and the processor is 1.66 GHz Intel Duo processor. I checked for updates and we have all the latest.
I tried restarting, trashing the preferences and cashes, and even rebuilt all the settings (accounts, passwords, etc.). The saved mail folders are well managed (only had +/- 80MB) and trashed mail it deleted regularly.
She started having problems a few weeks ago when she attached more than one attachment to one email. The operator is our office manager and doesn't have any graphics apps running, so I don't think it's a RAM issue.
The file that caused the problems was an illustrator file saved and a .pdf file. I was able to open it on my PowerBook but it is a complex graphic with lots of points. The problem might be just that file, but it's really causing problems.

Coming in as an icon?
If Mail is trying to preview a complex PDF or AI that might be causing it to crash?
Is it happening with say a text file or multiple jpgs?

Have you tried opening the file in a different app on a different computer?

The file is a illustrator file saved as an illustrator pdf. It is pretty complex with a lot of points but, still only 1.2 MBs. I did open it up on another computer with success. It views on my machine (the one it opened on) as a preview not an icon.
We're having some success with other files now so the fire is out. But, it might be nice to know what caused it to avoid it in the future. The only think I can think is the illustrator .pdf format was causing problems. With that said, she had gotten 3 other files saved the same way the day before.
Who knows maybe it was just the deadline gremlins.
Thanks

Then if its NOT crashing as an icon then Mail cannot PREVIEW it and it is causing i t to crash.. . .maybe?

Probably a corrupt file. It might look like 1.2 MB on the desktop but the mail app might read it as much larger, or be having trouble reading it at all.
Did you try compressing it to .zip and then emailing it?
