Making your own fonts?

Alexander's picture

Hey everyone!

I was wondering which application(s) are the best and most commonly used for making your own fonts. I have no experience in this field, so therefore i turn to this forum :)

Thanks in advance!

If you're interested in

If you're interested in typeface design, I suggest you check out this forum: Typophile you'll soon find out that type design is an art in itself and a hell of a lot more work than sitting down one day and saying 'I want to make a font'. The best way to start is by sketching by hand of course, from there some people use Illustrator to get their ideas onto the computer and then it would go into FontLab or a program like it. I suggest you do a lot of research before you dive into it. No offense to you but I doubt you'll be successful in your first attempt, people do this specific design as a lifetime job and there's so much knowledge that you need to make a successful face. Good luck! (Be sure to visit the Typowiki on that website!)

David is right.

Typography is a whole world that needs a lot of time and effort to get into. I've seen great designers trying to do a font and it just didn't look right. There is a lot to learn about typography until your font starts to look acceptable. I never tried to create a whole font, but I had lot of fun creating custom logo types. I would not discourage you. You may have a great talent, so make sure you give it a go if you have the interest.

There is a very simple tool to experiment:
