melange round 2
melange (134 pencils) | Tue, 2007-06-19 20:12ok, here we go again. this is a complete 180 from my last card. I'm not sure if that's a good thing. Actually, I'm having such a difficult time with designing something for ME it's crazy. It's like I can do anything in the world, and I can't pick anything!
Let me give you background. I'm an environmentalist, and i'm doing freelancing to acquire clientel that is looking to make their business collateral more environmentally friendly. Working in the printing industry, i've seen how much is wasted, and i want to do my little part in helping to fix that. With that said, I don't want to seem like a hippy, because i'm not. Not that hippies are bad, but i'm just putting that out there.
What i want to convey with both my logo and my card that I'm an environmentally friendly company, but also clean and youthful. I'm trying to stay away from the whole landscaper look. I swear every design i've made would look great for a landscaping/flower/tree company. I felt this still had that super clean look i was going for, but with a little more going for it then the last time around?
Also, i'm not totally set on the tagline thing either. Seems kinda kitchy still. Thoughts?
Rip it apart if it's horrible. I guess i'm just having a little trouble judging it for myself?
Thanks!

Honey, when it comes to the environment, most hippies were on the earth-friendly path decades ago, so don't fret about being confused for one. ;-)
That said, I think your design here is very attractive, but I'm not sure it conveys the message of the tagline. My first reaction to the two-sided design was that it's wasteful: twice the press time and twice the ink. I know that's not much of an issue, but for what it's worth, that's what hit me. To misquote my favorite proto-hippie, Marshall McLuhan, "the medium is the message." What medium (combination of stock and ink) promoted with what combination of tag and design would say, "Work with me -- I'll make your business greener" or "I'll make your footprint on Mother Earth a little lighter"? How about a very thin translucent stock? Or one of the earthy French Speckletone papers -- yeah, I know, too landscapey. But they mean what they say, if you get my drift.
What meaning are you giving the two rings, which appear to be your logo now. Orbits? Electrons? Middle Earth Meets Bridezilla? Please explain -- I'm missing something!

haha! i guess i was trying to convey interconnectivity between different things. ie. us and our environment.
I agree with the second side, i'm just trying to figure out how to use that space for something useful. (i guess i was just trying to see if i was on the path to greatness or not)
I'd say that yes there's more ink involved, but for me, since i'm pre press and work at a printer, it's not really very wasteful on my end. I'm still considering scrapping the second side if i can't think of anything important to go there.
I considered a plastic card, but that felt even more wasteful. I though maybe getting something etched in metal? but no dice.
I'm considering doing something where there's seeds embedded in the paper, so you'd essentially plant it and it would bloom into something. i've seen the idea before, but i'm not 100% certain on how to accomplish it yet.

As a hippy, definitely don't do plastic or metal... or anything that takes thousands of years to degrade. Stick with recycled paper.
well, your stock selection is easy. 100% post-consumer recycled. Try Wayerhouser (or however you spell it), hey have great recycled stock selections.
and go with a soy-based ink. you can even tell people about the paper and ink you are using on the back of the card so they REALLY see how concerned about the environment you are.
a growing business card! :)

maybe it will be somehow useful to you.
I know this is late, so you might not even read it . . .
But you have a unique sense of style that is modern enough that I don't think anyone would consider you a hippie.
This card is chic, I love it.
Definitely read it, and appreciate the comment!
I'm working on using this but in a bit of a different way.
