Memory buying advice
Ivan | Thu, 2005-03-03 19:56We're getting 2GB memory for both an iMac G5 1.8Ghz and and PB17" 1Ghz. We found the best price at 18004memory, but for both machines there is a cheaper noname brand and a more expensive Samsung brand. Is there a speed difference between them or any other performance or relyability factor that we should consider? Why is the Samsung more expensive?
This is what we are considering to get:
AN4064U/1GB/Q2I5-2 | 2GB UPGRADE (1GBX2) FOR Apple iMac G5 PC3200 DDR | $309.00
ALG3364U/1GB/Q2G-2 | 2GB KIT (1GBX2) DDR 333 PC2700 SO-DIMM UPGRADE FOR APPLE POWERBOOK G4 | $389.00
What do you think please?

I've read quite a few post on dpreview.com about getting stuck
with bad cheap memory sticks, non compatible with G5s.
I wouldn't get the cheapest ones period.
Lots of people seem to be buying them at

I'm sorry but I have no advice on which brand to get;
I guess Samsung is more expensive 'cause the brand
which it could mean more quality control=less problems?

I've always found Kingston ValueRam seems to work pretty well. I've never had an issue with any of it when I've used it in a Mac.

i tried to order from memorysolutions but they are giving me trouble with my card. apparently they can't verify with my bank because of the time difference. c'mon! :D
Ivan I would suggest you buy RAM from a maker and not those noname RAM that is sell in every dirty pc store online..
I've encounter numerous of problems with people getting memory issues while putting in noname RAM inside of Powermac G5 and iMac G5.. it's not worth it to buy something that isn't working properly with your mac.
Read several issues that the noname sometimes work well for a while then they just crash.. I'm glad I've got real RAM in my G5..
thanks. i tried with several vendors, but no luck, finally it looks like OtherWorldComputing excepted my card. i don't understand, because i show on amazon all the time. i hope OWC is good place to get the RAM from.
Funny you posted this Ivan. I have been thinking of upgrading RAM on my kid's eMac and was wondering the same thing.
By the way...On that same note, I think it's hilarious when my 5 yr old son tells PC users that Apple computers are the best! ;)
so small and so smart already ;)
It reminds me of that TV Commercial that Apple did some years ago about a little boy and his mates while eating lunch in school..
Anyone remember that?
just received my 2GB from Other World Computing. can't wait to get home to see the improvement over 512MB in my iMac G5! :D
will report how it works in a few days...
