Metric vs US Paper Density

Mintsauce's picture

I live and work in South Africa. We use the metric system (Hurray!) My fiancé however lives in the US, where they don't use the metric system (shame). First part of the wedding stationary that we're doing is the "Save the Date" cards.

Here's what happens. We're trying to get quotes from both SA printers and US printers. So I, unsuspectingly, send the quote request for 335gsm paper and receive a quote back for 80# cover. I have no idea whether this is the same or not.

I need help. Not only will I need to know for this, but since I'll be moving to the US soon, I'm going to need to know these things before I can start working there. (Or am I wrong? Please tell me I am... please!)

Does anybody know of a comparrison chart or something? I've checked wikipedia's page on paper density and found very little help. Is there an easy way around this or am I going to have to get my calculator out?

Conversion Chart

Unfortunately the U.S. doesn't use Grams Per Square Metre.

You'll have to adjust as the basis for weight of paper here is the designated fixed weight of 500 sheets, measured in pounds, in that paper's basic sheet size. It is important to note that the "basic sheet size" is not the same for all types of paper.

Here's a conversion chart.

Thanks a million, that chart is perfect. Anxiety: gone!
