Mexican Restaurant Menu
jcxm360 (86 pencils) | Tue, 2006-09-26 08:41This is my first assignment in Typography class and it's a front cover of a restaurant menu. I was assigned to create a Mexican restaurant menu for El Mariachi using typeface for emphasis. I was told to use negative and positive spaces, shapes and fonts only and no illustrations or photos.
Please let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

I like what you've done with the decrotive border along the top, my only concern is that the font feels almost Japenese. I would suggest something like BlackCurrent http://www.veer.com/products/typedetail.aspx?image=DET0000106, which is kind of playful. If you don't have access to a large library of fonts I would also recommend trying Warnock Pro (mac system font).
Good luck with your project.

I think the "el" is too far away from the "mariachi". I didn't even realize they go together. You need to find a way to treat them as a unit. Also, the "m" alone reminds me of the Marriott Hotels logo (they use the solo "m" a lot) http://marriott.com
I do like the direction you are headed, though. The shapes and colors are quite attractive.
...did your instructor ask you to mention both Mexican AND Spanish? The language may be the same, but the foods are as different as night and day.
As for Mariachis...puro Mexican. Other than that...I like the feeling. Not sure about the colors, but I like where it is going.
Yes my instructor provided all Text for the menu and it did say Mexican and Spanish Restaurant.
Thanks for your comment
I am definitely going to fix the "el" in el Mariachi to make it look more part of it. I will also play with other fonts and colors, but the layout I will keep..
Thanks for your help guys..
I'm missing an idea. Otherwise I think the style of decor and colors are correct.
