MobileMe moving to iDisk
KellyR (525 pencils) | Mon, 2011-06-06 19:58I found out in a roundabout way that Apple's MobileMe is going to move over to a new service called iDisk.
I only found out through the grapevine on Facebook, mind you. I don't recall seeing an email come to me from Apple regarding the upcoming changes to my MobileMe account.
YES. MobileMe has been buggy at times, but I've really enjoyed it, for the most part. That I'm not going to have to shell out another $100 for a year's subscription is nice. But I'm wondering what this transfer entails?
Has anyone else heard more about this? What do existing MobileMe customers need to do to ensure uninterrupted service to their emails in the transition? From what I've read, it sounds like I have to re-register with iDisk now. Frustrating, but maybe I'm wrong.

MobileMe is going to be replaced by the free iCloud service. This gives some useful info: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4597
It looks like the transfer will be fairly unnoticeable for most things (email, calendar, contact syncing) as Apple will be keen to do it right after the MobileMe mis-fire. However, things like online email and calendar access are a complete unknown, as are personal websites.
It looks like iDisk will be replaced by iCloud storage, and Galleries will be replaced by the Photostream service.
I'm with you in that I've really enjoyed MobileMe and I'm happy to pay its yearly fee. My suspicion is that internally within Apple (and specifically including Steve Jobs) MobileMe never got away from it's botched roll-out (something that barely affected me) and was always viewed as a failure.
