Modernising a logo
plancaster (28 pencils) | Mon, 2010-09-20 08:42Hi I'm looking for a bit of advice re a clients request to modernise their logo. They like the logo I designed for them a few years ago (5) but would like it tweeked ever so slightly as they will have to rebrand due to the adding of a tag line.
Before I get started, I would like to get your comments on the logo as it is....
Thanks

Not crazy about the font. Doesn't blend well with the V either.
Thanks for your comment.
The v and the dot from the i are making a eye, does that not come through???
I did not recognize it until you told me.
I saw the eye, I kinda like the eye, but I would probably make that V a little bigger and not aligning it on the bottom with the other letters.
That tagline is rubbing me the wrong way though, it's too small and it seems like there are actually two taglines. Pick one, go with it.

Cheers for the comments Leaky, I'll take your advice and play around with the V, but as for the tagline your spot on ADVERTISING SOLUTIONS was the original tag and now they want to add THE IN-STORE SPECIALISTS....
I didn't see the eye either until you said it. Right now it sort of has an Egyptian look to it. I just say work on the V and it would be great.
Overall I think the logo is quite good. It's very strong and pleasing. Of course, this will be the 'old' logo as you haven't started approaching the modern treatment.
If I were to find things to critique I'd think I'd want more white space between the 'V' and the 'i'. The tagline is too small and is difficult to see. A wide variety of solutions are available for that.
As far as modernizing the logo, my first impression is gently round off the san serifs. Once you have that, it may influence your decision on what font the 'V' should look like.
My two cents.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
I didn't read the "eye" until you pointed it out either. The letters are too bold for the V - they’re carrying a lot more weight. The "eye" would be more apparent with either a heavier dot on the i or the pupil reversed out somehow. But you should work on other ideas too. That's a very strong company name - read it literally and it's... "visual eyes". With that kind of starting point, you should be able to come up with something striking that doesn't need any explanation. The name, two letter i's... two circular letters... two S's... you have a LOT to work with here. Let's see some magic.
i didnt see the eye either. and even when i know its there, i still have to force myself to see it.
its funny how so many people who are proven competent (or very good) designers. see things so radically different...
it does look very "1996" though...
True.
Without my sense of direction, I don't know where I'd be.
Having two occurrences of the letter i in the word may be a red herring.
Consider the following:
I = self;
special eyes = in-store.
visualise = conceptual eyes vis-a-vis advert eyes solutions;
Also: eye of the tiger.
Each of these could in someway be red herrings too.
Don't over anal eyes it. Just modern eyes and style eyes the logo a little.

Now he's totally lost.
You sound like a batman villain. Campy Adam West Batman. Like a villain obsessed with eyes, kinda like an Egghead or Bookwork.
