Monitor setting question
bunscobear (42 pencils) | Sun, 2006-04-09 18:42Hi all
Got a mitsbishi diamond pro 920 CRT monitor and i mainly do screen based design/image based work and some print based work.
I wanted to know what temperture i should have it set on. I know that the rule of thumb says approx 5000°kelvin to kind of replicate paper white - but it looks far too yellow/warm.
for my main screen based work im not sure whether it should be 6300 or 9300°k.
anyone with any "power" monitor setting tips

If you are primarily designing for screen, i.e. websites, I would recommend leaving it at 9300. I believe this is the setting most monitors come set to from the factory these days, so if you design your site in this tamp space, that is the best bet that your users will see wht you are seeing. Problem with screen colors is that the "average users" monitor varies so much from one to the next, you are never going to truly be able to lock in what you intended.
If you are designing for print or doing any photo work however, then you will want to set up your monitor a bit warmer, around 5600K. This will allow you to best color match your photo colors from print to screen. Same deal with matching up cmyk / pantone colors. They will look closer on the screen at this temp to what they would look like when printed.
As my subject line implies, this is my understanding of things as far as the 5600K temp is concerned.
