Motion Graphics Anyone?

thornysarus's picture

Ok... I've made up my mind. I can't attest to the nature of the design business in other parts, but here in Nashville it seems that print work is steadily drying up.

Thus the post.

I've decided to make the transition to developing motion graphics and maybe offering video and video editing services for broadcast and/or online. I'm already skilled in design as well as all-things audio so it shouldn't be too difficult for me to make the leap. Or so it seems anyhow. :)

I'm leaning heavily towards Motion and Final Cut Pro Studio and do intend to get some official training at some point in the near future.

What I'd like to hear is any advice from folks that are already doing this, comments on the state of this market, any suggestions, what you'd do if you had it to do over again, any pointers, etc.

Much thanks in advance.

Funny you mention this Terry

I was thinking the same thing the other day, and still am considering it.

I've always had an interest in animation (from when i was about ~~~ < this high ) and i just love the emotional feeling that graphic design can give, and with motion graphic design this can only multiply!

So, yes, I too was thinking about it and wanna look into it more :-)

Motion design

Motion design was floating in my mind since more than a year.
The first thing that I heard to do is to learn the principles of traditional animation, music and film production. And for the software Adobe AfterEffects is the standard for motion design.

this thesis has an interesting finding about the future of design

Not a bad gig.

You can find work if you try, it sounds like you are close to a large city. There are always bands looking for videos, and pharma... there's pharma. My suggestion for the video editing would be to read your FCP manuals. Really friggin' read them. They're indispensable. When you're stuck, check out the forums at DV info net. I've never worked with Motion, but it seems like an iMovie version of After Effects to me. Good luck!

Motion .. You will need a

Motion .. You will need a heavy GPU CG card, like around 400$..
After effects 7 will also need that card now. But can still get buy with something smaller.

Motion AWESOME for 2d effects, After effects best for everything else. Go with afftereffects for now, Motion is STILL (two versions in) still not readyy to take over even close. It is very fun, but no real fine control and lots missing..

thought about it too. but

thought about it too.
but because in my whereabouts motion graphics is just starting up while u can find any cheap student to scratch you a lousy website.

i heard discreet stuff is great: combustion for motion graphics, compositing and visual fx, inferno, flame, etc. they are all very cool. dont forget about dvd authoring either. it should go hand in hand.

ps
how cool does it sound to be an "inferno operator"

Inferno and Flame

are too much expensive, they need dedicated hardware...
After Effects is the good choice (altough Shake seems to be the new standard) combined with FCP.. Motion, as tripdragon said, is not ready yet.
Then go to mograph, you'll find there tips, tutorials, job opportunities and much more.
