Motorcycle Exhaust Company
miklad (118 pencils) | Fri, 2010-03-26 09:37Ok. The client is very undecisive and cannot choose between these three logos.
It is for a motorcycle exhaust manufacturer in the uk. The market is flooded with very 'macho' brands - very much all following the same style.
Only a very few exhaust brands stick out from the rest - Akrapovich being one (do a google...), so this is an attempt to update the image of the company.
If you do a quick search, you'll see their current logo is VERY 80's! (And hasn't been updated since then!).
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts. Please bare in mind the logo will be used for everything - literature, online and actually on the cans themselves!)
(disclaimer: I actually designed only one of these - the others were designed by colleagues. Mine is the 'circular tail' design on the right.)
Be kind! :)

I like the two options on the right, but wouldn't mind seeing a development that could form the letter 's' from the tail icon? Just an idea.
Agree. The one of the right is best. The highlight is really distracting.
I take that on board - it's only there as a visual for the client for an embossed stamp on the exhaust pipe.
I have mono/solid/grey/pos/neg versions of it.
Cheers for the opinion! :D

the last one at right 2nd row is very nice!
try red typing too, I see people making black when sometimes it makes so 80's. In this case you could need some contrast but I think you could try and make it more "modern" just using the right color.
yes I'm brazilian xD
no. I really like the bottom left one. maybe just me but I think thats way cooler then the right ones.
Cheers. The issue I have with that one is that the shape is more Serpent than Scorpion.

Far right. Left one looks more like a hungry angry sperm about to strike rather than a scorpion...could work itself well into an AIDS awareness campaign. Middle one too literal.

i prefer the approach of the lower left one best. the ones on the right could easily be mistaken for a wave.
I like the bottom left also. As a motorcycle enthusiast, this plays more to the consumer of the product. It looks like wind in the hair, handlebars, sweeping curves in a road, freedom and maybe even a wind-blown wrench (many work on their own machines). I'm not crazy about the font though.
The center is too literal and reminds me of a stick shift in a car (not the image a motorcyclist wants to be reminded of when hitting the road).
The ones on the right, although not literal, are almost too precise and the confining curves lack the freedom of the left. Also the text may be kerned too tightly to be stamped into the metal of the pipes effectively. Not sure, but it could present a problem.
I personally like marks that are precise, but I like the fluid option for this product. If it were for an engine or precision parts I would say bottom right, but exhaust is typically purchased more for looks and cool factor.
Thank you very much Mr wombat - it's nice to get a biker's view.
I agree - an exhaust is purchased more for looks and the cool factor.
Personally, I think either of the two would work a treat, but I appreciated the insight into the 'swooping curves' of the left one. That wasn't something that occurred to me to be honest.
I too like marks that are precise - I guess that was the approach I had in mind when I designed my logo. All the circles are measured accurately and the result is a simply geometric 'icon' - ideal for stamps on products, avatars for social media, favicons and online tags. Saying that - the same can be said for the left-side one, albeit in a much looser way.
Thanks for the input - appreciate it.

I'd never seen a scorpion without legs xD
yes I'm brazilian xD
Ah... yes... erm.... they are obviously hidden behind the claws. Ahem...

Center or right. Left is not interesting at all to me - it seems at least one step down in quality from the other two. Right is the more finished mark, but the center sounds like it better fits the criteria as you described above. The scorpion outline could use some work - it seems heavy in the arms - but it's easy to imagine this logo (or variations of it) in all sorts of applications. The other ones not so much.
Thanks all - lots of varied choices there.
I can see why the client is confused!
I'll let you know how the project progresses.

Weighing in on this one a bit late it seems.
The one on the right is the strongest mark, I think, but I'm not satisfied with it. My first thoughts were "wave" and "crescent moon." My suggestion would be to make the sting about 30% smaller, giving it some separation from the bottom of the tail.
As I side note, I feel like the design on the left has potential, but not in its current form. Upturned sting doesn't seem "vicious" enough to me. With a bit more tweaking I think it could be the strongest one here.
Oh, and the middle design? Uhmmm, no.
The middle reminds me of the Olympic stadium in Montreal now that you mention it.

Just as a follow up to this project - the client went with mine (on the right).
For those interested, look out for it in the next couple of months.
