Sometimes usb doesn't work first time - i have found this a couple of times. Also try another usb slot. Hope that might work for you.

...In the Utilities foler in Applications and repair permissions first before seeing if it mounts, if not you can often force it to mount via that.

if your drive is a 2.5" drive, it will be self powered [ie: no AC adapter]. there may not be enough power running through one usb port on the powerbook to run it. You can get a usb cord that has two plugs on one end, for connecting to two separate usb ports on the computer. It uses one for power and one for data.

If it is a 3.5" drive, make sure it works on another computer. Then connect it, and go into disk utility and see if it is in the drive list on the left. If it is, but it hasn't appeared on the desktop or in the finder list, click it in disk utility, then clikc mount.

HELLO,
THANKS FOR THE REPLY GUYS,
I HAVE THE CABLE WITH TWO USB ENDS BUT STILL EVEN IF I PLUG BOTH OF THEM INTO THE USB PORTS , THE EXTERNAL HDD IS STILL NOT RECONGISED.
IF I OPEN THE DISK UTILITY ITS NOT THERE I ONLY SEE MY HD WITH OS, AND NOTHING ELSE!!

I GOOGLED AROUND AND I FOUND OUT THAT PBG4 SUPPLIES ONLY 500mA IN ITS PORT AND THATS NOT ENOUGH FOR THE EXT HDD.

I WANTED TO KNOW IF I USE FIREWIRE 400 WILL IT BRING ANY SIDE EFFECTS TO MY LAPTOP OR THE DISK???

If it's a firewire drive you should use firewire as it's faster.
