Music on a website

I have a client who wants to have some mp3 music playing on their website. This website is one which I created a while back and has been up and live for quite a while.

Now, I have never added music to any websites I have created, for any number of reasons, but having done my due diligence (sp?), it appears as if I am about to enter this realm.

My question, quite simply, is what is the best, and easiest way to implement this into an existing website? Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks...

A site that has music playing on it has me immediately hit the mute button at best, or at worst just go elsewhere.

I hear ya. Gotta do it, so I am looking for the least obnoxious method.

don't know any of the technical know how for making it happen, but i'll beg you to at least do this. make sure there's a "mute" button and it's easily found. i don't like music on a site, either (especially if it's something i might surf at work), but at least let me turn it off easily.

Use a tiny flash player and set the music to "off" by default. MOre here:

I searched "add music to my website" and there are a ton more options listed.

Why does your client want to go backward in time? It's funny how music loading on a site can be so "backward" but in today's design world, as you know, it's quite hokey starting with music on a site.

If you use a midi file it loads fast but sounds like crap. MP3 takes longer to load but sounds better but then a poorly looped file can show it's clunkiness. And you can't use professionally published songs (copyright infringement) so you better choose a very old song or something from a free podcast music site. Search cb for this thread.

There are lots of ways to do it, but Flash has the most penetration among browsers. You can easily build a small player that has the look and feel of the existing site, add a volume control and a host of other features.

Curious, mbennett...do you get to have a hand in the selection of lyrics? If so, what are you going to suggest for your client's website?

Nat and others, I have "strongly" discouraged my client from adding music to the site, but I am tired trying. I am just gonna do it and be done with it. It isn't something I would recommend by any stretch, but despite my best arguments, they want it and they are gonna get it.

Like I said, the task now is to find the most user friendly way to add one of the least user friendly features to a site. Flash will probably be the end result, I just didn't want to do it and then find out later that there was an easier. I simply don't have any experience adding music to a site, thank god.

3dog, I suppose the only appropriate music suggestion I could make for him would be "Back in Time" by Huey Lewis. To answer your question, I don't have any choice over the music that will be played, but I know it is in mp3 format. Legalities can be handled by his lawyer, should they arise. I just work here.....

Ha! That does seem like the perfect song choice for this project. Good luck with it.
Cheers.

Sorry it didn't come through, but I understand this is not your choice.

As for music, get free music; Use popular songs at your own peril since you don't technically have rights to do so.
