Quantcast

My first impressions of InDesign 3.0 (after using nuthin but Quark 4)

joecab's picture

Man this thing is s l o w ! I like all the extra features but after coming off of Quark 4.11 in OS 9.2 I was hoping something just a smidge snappier. Those different view settings don;t seem to be making a lot of difference.

Still picking up the new features ... but I do like this menu option to use Quark 4 keyboard shortcuts. And the Quark import is pretty good as long as the document isn;t too complicated. And *gasp* hanging punctuation! =:^o (Just to show you how pathetically behind I've been that this is actually exciting)

What setup are you using it on?

Dude, ID3 is a QUANTUM LEAP from that crappy old quark that doesnt support tables, transparency, edge effects, and drop shadows. And UNICODE!

I'd rather not say

you'll laugh at me O:) I just don't think it should require a dual to run at a decent clip, that's all. Adobe's been gettin a touch of the code bloat lately.

A dual what?

I have a dual 1.4 Mac, and it runs just fine. It has 1 GB of RAM and 44O GB of HD space.

It's not InDesign that's

It's not InDesign that's slow, it's OS X. Until you have dual G5 processors and 2 GB+ RAM, OS 9 can still seem faster. It's the burden many of us are willing to bear for the features and benefits of OS X.

ID, Yeh!

Welcome to the land of the living! He he. Do you miss the lack of screen redraw in Quark 4? The lack of service? Lack of upgrades? Lack of creating Book files? (Try it, you'll LOVE it!)

hey now

Quark 4 actually added a keystroke shortcut to force screen redraw! The other points: no argument!

ID is great

Hi - I've been a big quark supporter for a lot of years - even when a lot of my designer friends were using *gasp!* Illustrator for their page layouts.

After FINALLY going the ID route last year, I have to say I don't miss quark AT ALL. I love the features ID has, it's ease of use, no font problems (like I ALWAYS had in quark), no crashes. As a matter of fact, OSX may seem slower to you, but it IS more stable than system 9. And funny you should mention system 9 here, since I was only complaining about it in my own blog - http://www.creativeperspectives.blogspot.com.

Give ID more of a chance and you'll see you'll come to love it more than you ever did quark.

Ivan, you're the best! And this is my favorite blog now (other than my own - LOL)

Good luck with your blog!

Good luck with your blog! Hehe, we have creativebits, then we had creativeguy and now creativeperspectives. We should create some kind of a creative bloggers club or something. :)

Hmm

Could I join too? ;)

I'm liking CG quite a bit now, Jim's doing a good job with those tips. I'm guessing your doing all the design news and issues, and he focus' on tips and tricks, right?

CB, CG and a CP. Whatever next!

I used InDesign for the first time some weeks ago (for my last project) and I can see myself using it for a long time to come. There's just something about it which I really like, but can't quite explain. Y'all know the feeling right?

mck's picture

You guys should all join forces.

It would be better that way. Thereás no easy way to get the amountof visitors CB has, and you could have more quality content here.

Also, CG and CP sometimes just grab stuff from CB, so whats the big deal?

Abdul's picture

Umm

I don't know, it would be nice to have a CN - Creative Network.

I'm still a Quark fan no

I'm still a Quark fan no matter what... If I want "cool effects" I just use Photoshop. A layout software is for layouts, and a graphic software is for graphics. I prefer them separate. Although, if someone offered me double the pay from what I make now to work on ID, I'd switch over in a matter of seconds. :)

Photoshop CS

Now see Photoshop CS runs just fine in OS X. But ID still seems slow to me. And I love that ID lets you use Quark 4 key shortcuts -- smart move.

But I'm getting into it more now. I have a project coming up that's going to require Applescripting ID, so this should be interesting.

I switch over to ID more

I switch over to ID more then a year ago and I love it. Quark slowed me down so much. It runs very speedy on my dual G5 2.5. Even when I was on my dual G4/450 it was pretty fast on that too.

Get with it to OSX. ;)

ID integration!!

beside the killer extra features of ID over Quark I love the integration
with the other Adobe apps! Everything looks the same from ai to Psd to ID...the color managent works!

Quark is Quarky BUT....

I must say that I have not used ID3 on a G5 but I must say that when I used ID1 or ID2 it was slow as hell on a 1.4GHz G4 with 2 GB of RAM. I could zip through layouts in Quark although I "would" say Quark is not the greatest in the industry with its capabilities far behind ID. But in general I thought it was a very fast app for production work even on a old ass G4 running OS9 with less than a gig of RAM. I used to be frustrated with redraw issues and preview issues but once I got used to the fact that I knew what it looks like in PS I did not care about the crappy preview in Quark.

Over all I think ID3 might be like Motion from Apple. If anyone has used Motion you will know that it needs to a high end system to make use of its cool features otherwise its a bit of a pain to work with but hey its a very new app requiring the latest hardware so we cant diss it too much.

In general I would say at the time that ID came out to try and take over Quark it was NOT the fastest kid on the block. I knew it was sluggish and
S L O W. I would really have to play with ID to appreciate it I guess.

I love ADOBE don't get me wrong and I would love to have all kinds of effects in a desktop publishing program instead of doing everything in PS but hey if the damn thing is sluggish the client is going to eat me alive. And that I think is the bottom line in the production world.

SPEED MY FRIEND.
