My first website in CSS
jcxm360 (86 points) | Fri, 2007-12-28 19:38This is the first time I create a website using CSS completely without tables.. The website is http://www.ibnorthside.org.. Its a redesign of the old site http://ibnorthside.ezkiah.pixelriders.net/. The old website and logo was not done by me. Thanks for your comments.

Great job! Both your CSS and XHTML validate successfully (and that's not easy to do!)
The top bar is a little bland, design-wise, and your design width is a bit wide (I try to limit mine to 800px if I can help it) but otherwise you did a great job.

Nice job.
Isn't it a nice feeling to get rid of those tables?

Definitely.. I was reluctant at first. I was use-to having fireworks do all my work but now I see huge benefits.
Great job overall! As a professional web designer I must say you did a fantastic job.
Your XHTML is clean and concise without extra markup. Your CSS is also very clean and using a lot of the shorthand that many developers have yet to realize.
My only recommendation would be to get in the habit of coding more for accessibility as well. You have ZERO title tags for your links, and all links should have title tags for accessibility. While your images do have alt tags from what I can tell, they could be a little more descriptive. Remember you need to always try and keep in mind those with disabilities when designing a website in this day and age, alt and title tags are just the start.
From a design standpoint, I would also consider doing something other then just an underline for your main navigation rollovers, possibly even using the same graphic gradient you have as your "active" state when on a page.
I also feel the inner page left navigation could use a little more whitespace around the links and the box that contains it.
Overall though, fantastic job for a first time CSS site. I am having a hard time believing this was your first site using only XHTML/CSS!
I will definitely work on all that. Thanks for your advice.
I can't comment on anything technical, because I'm more of a print designer, but I like the ease of use, the clean design and the way the whole site is organized. There's a TON of information on the site, so your good navigation is critical.
I wonder if people will know they should click on the AWANA logo for a page about that program. Would you consider adding a playful hint? It might not be necessary -- after all, I figured it out :-)
It's probably an optical illusion, but it seems the logo was a little bit more saturated on the original site. I think it could go even farther in that direction. This might take care of the blandness Nat mentioned.
I'm really impressed. Tell me you didn't do this as a volunteer! :-)

Looks great, that clean design is harder to get than it looks, well done !
