My Logo Biz

Okay so what do you think? This is for my logo design website, we only charge $14 so its not that professional as opposed to some of you.

There are 2 versions as well as an icon in the top right which we will use for twitter/favicons and other stuff.

Also what do you think should be changed?

Hi there,

I think is a good start, however for me is little too plain, maybe trying with another font type, something that will catch more the eye. The spacing between letters could be a little smaller. The color combination doesn't do it for me, you could try a different combination, this is a great website for combination ideas: http://kuler.adobe.com/

That is just my five cents here.

Good luck ;)

Hey frank,

I really appreciate the reply! I think that is my problem with logo design, i've been doing this for 2 years and haven't advanced really anywhere. I create logos that are to plain but not simple, if you know what I mean.

Anyhow, the colors (grey/blue/orange) are the ones that go with the template I am using, I changed the colors a little so it is more pleasant looking. Thanks for kuler link by the way!
The blue is the main website color and the grey is the background, orange is just an off color not really found anywhere.

Here I created a bunch more revisions starting from bottom going up, my favorite are in the box that I made.

thanks

I like the bottom left one but maybe more closley kerned like your other ones. Theres something about the cut out shape that doesn't do it for me. I like the orange alot better than the teal, but as you mentioned above it has no relevance so, it's best to pick something that matches the companys profile. I quite like the .net in the speech bubble, and I think your logos do look professional and commercial! :) Maybe you should be charging a little more than $14 ;)

Please don't charge $14 for your services. Crappy or not (which, I mean, these aren't THAT bad) $14 is not even worth 1 hour of your time, especially if you're located in a developed nation like America.

I understand what you're saying about plain versus simple, if this is your own personal site and not something that you're working on for someone else, I would suggest that you scrap the name all together....I mean, really, QualityLogos?? Be creative and find an identity that reflects you. It might give you a better direction on where to take the logo conceptually.

You think I enjoy charging $14?

My logos aren't worth that much more if you've seen them =)

Also, thanks for the suggestion on the website change, maybe I will think of something after I launch this (I need something to go up for now)

I agree, you are killing yourself asking $14. That's like 10-20 minutes worth of work. Are you licensing these logos as a one time deal, or will you be selling and renaming the same logo for multiple customers? If your logos are that bad, spend a little more time on them and then ask more.

Yeah, by the way I don't spend usually more than an hour on each logo. I've seen the process of one of the pro's and they like sketch it out, brainstorm and all that. Basically I just open illustrator and start working from the get go.

And no I dont rename the same logo, lol. That would be really bad. Each logo is custom and they get all the files once we are done. I've been doing this for 2 years so I have a process down but I came to this site a couple weeks ago to enhance my skills in order to charge more, thanks.

Honestly I wouldn't begin a business unless I was at a satisfactory level of skill and experience. Spending less then an hour on a logo and only charging $14 hurts you, the business that has contracted your business, and the integrity of the industry. The process you have now, will not result in effective branding creation, unless you are incredibly talented and by the admittance of spending two years of this, with the result of still only charging $14, you are obviously not. It's great that you are looking towards others to help you grow as a designer, but us telling you where to fix your logo, only scratches the surface of more troubling problems, i.e: your process.

Spend more time brainstorming concepts, flesh them out entirely, and then, if you are having problems on where to go, ask for others' opinions. No one wants to spend time critiquing a half-assed logo (and spending about an hour on a logo, is half-assed)

Okay, thanks for the information, this is very helpful. Might I add, the website isn't a full fledged business, just a website really where some of my clients (people who basically just start websites for blogs etc) can get their logos for cheap.

I'll definitely take your feedback into thought, thankyou.

At 14 bucks a logo, I would remove the "Quality" part.

Man....any designer who shamelessly utters these words should have their Adobe product keys deactivated. STAT!

I would use the one below the logo at the top left corner. Use it withouth that scratch, it's just unnecessary and it reduces the readability.

I think the logo is missing an idea.

minneola24's picture

Hmm, but trying to make a logo for a logo design company is pretty hard eh?

Ivan's picture

Not any harder than any other company I think. You just need to identify what makes you unique or special. Failing that you can simply use something that represents your business. Shoemakers show a shoe. Bakers show a bun. What do you do? Pick colors, draw, think, etc. These all have symbols you can use.

armaanahluwalia's picture

Hey,

Of the logos you've shown here, I enjoyed the symbol at the top the most, mainly because it looks the most unique of them all. I feel like these logos probably represent the sort of product you give your customers so in that sense, I feel they are great.

However, speaking as a designer, I would have to agree that not ideating before (/during/after) picking fonts is a mistake. I started out exactly like you a few months back but have seen in my own work the difference between the end product with and without the same.

I feel like great logos come out of identifying certain constraints and then solving a problem keeping those constraints in mind, be they what the company does, how the logo will be applied, what sort of emotion the viewer identifies with the logo etc. I agree with Ivan there.

More than anything else you must take pride in your work. That is what makes a great designer. Work for an hour? Fine, but make that the most productive hour ever!

You might have heard the saying, "Fast...Good...Cheap -- Choose Two." You could play with that concept somehow, maybe.

I join others here in chafing a little over the idea of someone basically lowering property values for designers who support their families doing this, and working hard to do it well. You aren't really offering logos for $14. You're offering some kind of Illustrator doodle for $14. There's nothing wrong with that if you're honest about what you offer -- it could even be kinda cool to go that way. Work it! Be Mister Cheap, Logos on the Down Low. But please don't try to pass off what you're doing as creating a logo. A great deal more goes into logo development than you apparently appreciate.

I hate to be the barer of bad news but what you are doing isn't design. Don't worry, many young designers get sucked into the black hole of the computer. You jump right in, spend 30 minutes working on the first thing that pops into your head and you're stuck with one concept after an hour of work. Because of the extended effort you can't ditch the concept and walk away. As proof as to why it doesn't work take an honest look above.

What you are really after is a pile of 'rough' ideas to start the design process so you can CHOOSE the best overall direction before striking the finishing nail on the computer.

Think of it like building a house. If a carpenter just started grabbing and nailing boards together rom the stack without a well thought out blueprint they'd have little or no chance of creating something of value. You need that blueprint. Your brain is your best friend.

The best thing you will ever learn about designing a logo is to TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER, pick up 5-10 sheets of paper along with a pencil and start brainstorming. Sketch for a half hour. Anything goes. Explore ideas, use aspects of one idea to create another. After 30 minutes STOP and walk away for a day. Let your subsconscious mind go to work. Come back to it, find what is working and what is not and refine your design. When you have 2-3 solid concepts, scan them in and work on creating your vector in BW. Once that is complete you can explore color combinations.

A challenge you to deliver use us a set of logo concepts worth $1000 to critique. You can do it with some practice.

Nothing at all says logo or quality. As noted above, begin with a sketch pad and pen.

One thing I've learned in advertising is that price does not affect business. If I cut my prices in half - I wouldn't get a single new customer thru the door. By charging $14, the only thing you are doing is putting a tag on yourself that says "unprofessional". You might pick up a few cheapskates who will nickel and dime you on every job you do for them, but the prudent course would be to charge the going rate for wherever you work and in the meantime, try to advance your skill set instead. You also have to remember you're not selling people something they need everyday like a gallon of gas - the demand for logos is much too small to make a living off quantity. The bottom line is you will not make a living at that price. Any businessperson will tell you that the work goes well beyond whatever time it is you spend creating the logo. You need to keep your computer up to date, do the billing, pay taxes, press the flesh, quote jobs, etc... etc... All that down time has to be covered by your fee and $14 certainly will not cut it. Sometimes what looks good on paper totally backfires in real life. I guarantee that's what will happen here.

So far as the logo design? Pick whichever one you want - they all look like $14 logos to me.

Ouch. Okay - I went overboard there.... sorry. ;-)
