MY MAC REGION ISSUE!!

inferness's picture

ok... so i know i am not the smartest cookie in the jar, but nonetheless.

I bought my mac powerbook g4 in 2000... and didnt know any better than to just do as was suggested. I went through all the attempt at choosing the mac region.... and finally chose the mac region that i use the most often...region1.

now it sucks.

i live in India and watch a helluva lot of movies...most of the dvd regions are completely different.... all, in fact. It gets really frustrating and I need a solution.

When i use VLC... it doesnt open anything other than the menu.

i then tried region X which also wont work on my mac, cuz I ALREADY CHOSE MY REGION and finalized my choice...

I know I am an idiot and would appreciate it if someone could help me here. Preferably talking to me "like i was a six year old..."

Please help!!!! Somebody!!!

You need to flash your drive. . .

The OS gives your 3 opportunities to finalise your region, after that the firmware of your DVD drive locks into the region, i.e Region 1 from North America. Regions mean that if you buy a EU DVD disk it will NOT work in a drive locked into Region 1 and vice versa. The ONLY way to UNLOCK this, I believe, is to troll the web in search of a piece of software that RESETS the firmware of your drive .. .

WARNING THIS CAN BE A DANGEROUS ATTEMPT AND MAY LEAVE YOU WITH A USELESS DVD DRIVE.

Now VLC SHOULD be able to play ANYTHING so I am confused why you can't get VLC to play it. Please note that VLC DOES NOT automatically PLAY DVD's you need to choose the drive and disc and then press play. Have you downloaded the most recent version of VLC?

If you have BIG HD you could use DVDRIP to take the data OFF the CD whilst stripping the DVD of its region, but I have never tried that on a DVD drive that has been locked to another region. . .

thank you but...

i tried that... but for some reason even VLC only opens the region 1 DVDs... it just hangs for anything else...

and as far as i am concerned... my mac never hangs!!!!! :0(

anything else???

Unfortunately. . .

Once your locked into a region even VLC won't be able to read the disc. . . or so it seems: (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/774551.html)

You can change the zone up to 5 times.
Unfortunately, with Matsushita drive, even VLC won't allow to play disk from a different region as the DVD drive won't physically let you access sectors on a disk from a different region.

Luckily, my MBP came with a LG drive, which I could flash to be region free.

You can check to see what kind of drive you have by going into (about this mac) More information and selecting Hardware-Disc burning.

Your best bet

The previous commenter mentioned that the Matsushita drives hard-lock the region after it's written into the firmware, I can't say for sure that there isn't a way around this, but you may just want to look into buying a new drive and installing it yourself if you want to keep everything inside the box, or you could buy an external drive to use when watching movies (heck, get a Dvd burner while you're at it)

An annoying problem

I have two solutions for you. One is to go ahead and change your DVD region to whatever region you will be using from no on. Your Mac will let you do this five times, then you're stuck with whatever your fifth choice was. So decide wisely.

The second solution would be to purchase an inexpensive DVD player and easily set the code for what you want. There are workaround tips for almost all model DVD players online; just Google for it, or maybe someone here has a good URL. You can set your new DVD player for Region 0, which will let you play any region's DVDs, or you can opt for whatever region India uses. You can change it later, any number of times, so save the workaround info. Hook your Mac up to the DVD player when you want to watch a movie. The one I bought is about 8" x 8", 2" tall, with a remote. I got it at Target for about $35 US. It has a remarkable array of high-end features for such an inexpensive player. I'm very happy with it. (I use it for foreign films I can only get from Europe, India and elsewhere via eBay or amazon.com.uk and so on that I otherwise wouldn't be able to play.)
