My new host

mijlee's picture

I just signed up to these guys for my personal hosting. Amazing deal and from what I found on the web they seem to have a good reputation for support, uptime and general service.

About £70 a year (incl. domain) and I get PHP5, MuSQL, masses of disk space and bandwidth.

Also if you sign up using the URL below we both get 500Mb extra disk space.

Thanks for the offer

Do you get shell access? What's are the uptime stats? Can you create unlimited number of databases? How responsive is customer service?

BTW. why with a few exceptions, hosting co sites are so ugly?

ugly

To be honest, the ugly thing is part of the reason I went with media temple last time.

Kind of like judging a book by it's cover but o well. It was refreshing and they should be catering to their clients.

mediatemple rocks as far as looks

Yes. Their frontpages are very nice. But that's the easy part. How about their control panels, forums, knowledge base? Are they styled nicely as well?

panels

thats where the book judging comment comes in, but they're not bad.

didn't mean to steal the thunder from mijlee's host but media temple has control panel screen shots here if you were intersted Ivan:

I'd have to say cpanel is my favorite to work with though.

Heard good things

I’ve heard great things about MT in terms of services and reliability and there is no doubt that their systems are the best looking around. But they are pricey in comparison with what you can get these days if you look around.

Servage have given me everything I need for a price that isn't gonna hurt my bank accoount. Here was my wish list;

  1. PHP
  2. unlimted free MySQL databases
  3. unlimited sub domains
  4. IMAP email
  5. htaccess
  6. unlimited FTP accounts

Servage givea me all this for £70 a year and the servers seem pretty quick from my minor testing of uploading and downloading large files. i don't give a shit if their site is a bit laim, as long as mine is ok that's all that matters. to me at the moment.

MT = crap

Yes I've heard a lot of good things about MT, so I recommended it to a friend some time ago. Then after a few months, a spammer had been sending out stuff with his email address - and so he got booted off MT. He tried getting in touch with them, telling them "well hey, if you look at the headers, you see that I did NOT send out these spam emails". But they seemed to be total dorks and simply replying with "hey don't be a fool, they got your email address on them - go find yourself a new host".

If that's not one big reason for looking elsewhere, I dunno what is... stuff like that really just pisses me off...

Personally, I like DreamHost and ReadySetConnect :)

not sure, 99.9%, yes, quick

I don't need shell access at the moment so it's not something I look for but the control panel does have tools for setting up specific .htaccess files and cron tasks.

According to their stats the up time is 99.98% but I haven't been able to verify this externally yet.

Yep comes with MySQL 3.23 installed and you can set up unlimited databases. Also come with phpMyAdmin pre installed for all database admin tasks.

Haven't tried full on customer service yet, but my account was set up manually by one of the support staff today (Sunday) and it was turned round in less than an hour.

Other cool things that I've found when checking out the control panel is that you get spam filtering, unlimited sub domains and up to 25 domains.

I am well happy so far.

Support turn around

Just put in my first support request and had an answer within 2 hrs on a Sunday afternoon. Pretty good i think, especially for the money.
