captonjohn (347 points) | Thu, 2009-09-03 21:15Hi, this is my new website. I wanted to make a site which outlines my blog and my portfolio. Please have a look on it and comment. Logo is not final, new logo is to be placed.

I'm pretty sure it's a copyright violation to use the photo of Hugh Laurie for your commercial purposes. I assume that's just a placeholder for now.
I'm confused about the purpose of your site. Is it to attract clients? If so, why would you want to have all those articles about how to deal with horrible clients? That's kind of weird, actually, and off-putting.

The purpose of site is to attract potential clients as I'm a freelancer. I want to get new clients as well as to communicate with other creative persons this is the reason I designed this layout as a blog. .All photos and articles are just a for dummy purpose and not finalized. Thanks for focusing my attention to that point it was just a mistake. I'll be careful about posting articles in blog.
May I know your view about layout? Do you have any suggestion to make it more better? It will help me a lot.

This layout has been done to DEATH. You basically made a template. And a poor one at that, cause it's basically a few paint strokes along the edges.

Check out what I've been up to lately!

I'm going to print it out and eat it.

Can you tell me what things you feel are poor or not good? I basically had many ideas if I implemented them but I was clear that I must keep layout simple so anybody can easily navigate and understand it. Your suggestion can help me a lot, please tell if you feel anything can be better here.

The Superman logo with "safe sex" added is also a copyright violation.
He's been in love with that connection for a long time. We had a huge discussion about copyright violations that obviously made no impression.

Sorry for any copyright violation. I'm just showing my ideas and don't claim about any ownership. These are just ideas like other creative persons and superman ad is just personal work for my portfolio purpose.
by the way thanks for pulling my attention to that point.

It's going to work against you. If I'm hiring someone and he has copyright violations in his portfolio, I'm going to wonder about his professional judgement in general AND his creativity level. You're an artist (or designer) - take your own photos, think up your own interesting ideas. Using established criteria just makes others believe original thought is not included in your skill set.
I agree with Art D. Rector. The choices you make for your portfolio tell people about your skills and attitude -- including whether or not you are trustworthy. Using a copyrighted image in your portfolio is a violation of that copyright, because you are using it for commercial purposes -- you are using it to sell your services. You could be sued. Stop thinking that way RIGHT NOW. It isn't creative. It's dumb. If you were working for an ad agency and came up with that idea for a client, you would either be laughed at or fired. Or both. When aqre you going to get this through your head? We've talked to you about this before.
Now then. You asked what I thought of the general design of the layout, and I will tell you that it looks like a generic Live Journal page or something like that, for fans of pirate movies. I'm sorry, but it doesn't say "professional designer" to me at all. You would be better off with something that doesn't try to imitate an ancient style. Be more slick, more direct, less cluttered. And for heaven's sale, be ORIGINAL.

Art D. Rector, mara06,
Thanks for providing this valuable information, I've withdrawn all copyright material which I felt should be delete.
mara06, thanks for honestly criticizing my work. I'm positively taking your suggestions and going to implement seriously. You were right that was a student work which I withdrawn from my professional portfolio and that portfolio layout was my first web layout so very soon I'll post other designs retaining it's originality and simplicity.
