My Unexpected Apple Customer Service Hell!!!
I'm not one to complain, but when something breaks and is in warranty it should be replaced or fixed, either will do.
In this case it was my Apple Airport Extreme, something went wrong, so as I always do I called Apple Care and was immediately offered a swap.
I was shipped a new unit it became apparent it that it wasn't the base station, but a power adaptor issue.
First I was shipped an incorrect power cord (one for Europe as opposed to the UK), another call to Apple Care and the correct ones were shipped and arrived.
Skip forwards a week and I go to an ATM only to discover there is £119 missing from my account, I couldn't work it out, perhaps the bank had made a payment early? Perhaps I'd spent more than I thought I had?
So I checked my online banking, no record of a transaction, strange I thought, I called my bank to check what had happened, according to them a transaction was in process and they couldn't tell me more until the payment cleared in to the account of whom ever it was sent....
So I waited, worrying what had happened, identity theft, perhaps?
I awoke the next day and checked my online banking, to discover what this transaction was for, as I logged on it appeared to my surprise, it was a payment to Apple computer!
Apparently, Apple Customer Services give you a ten working day time frame in which to return your defective item, despite me having complied to this (I returned it in 8 working days) they billed me anyway!
Apple Care apparently are now requesting a card number from you when you call (which I gave in good faith to a company I've had no problems with before and would trust implicitly), and if you do not return your part within ten working days you will simply be billed for a new one regardless!
While I understand the business reasoning behind this, it is a swift change in tactic to my prior experience, what's more as above people such as myself are being charged unlawfully.
Some glitch in the system perhaps, and yes they are refunding the money, but during that time, being self employed and having a very tight control over my finances, I went beyond my authorised overdraft for which I will be charged £30 by my bank. So, Apple Care have managed to actually leave me out of pocket in the process of fixing one of their own items.
I am not a very happy Apple user.

I'm looking at you Adobe! . . . it gets SO big that middle management starts losing touch with lower echelons. Bob passes it to jim who passes it to Harry down the line. So customers become numbers and care becomes someone who doesn't care really because he's just following a string of orders from some guy who has NO idea what he's doing in the first place.

not to attempt to blame you, or to defend apple, but this is one of the reasons that debit cards are very problematic for making larger purchases, especially if you don't have a healthy balance to safeguard. if it were a credit card instead of a debit card, it would only have affected your available credit, not your available cash.
i know everyone has different needs and different financial situations, but this is the kind of thing i've heard from a lot of people before (not apple issues, but debit card issues) and it can really bite you in the ass.
Any other time it'd have been fine.
It's just I laid out a few thousand for various stuff and had budgeted for the month down to the last penny.
Not happy.
I'd go after Apple and be persistent and annoying about it!
Went through a similar incident many years ago when funds were stretched to the nth degree. My insurance company doubled up on their *yearly* withdrawal from my chequing account, the same month I had issued quite a number of cheques and cued up some automatic debits. It was their fault so after some much needed bitching on my part, they recompensed me and paid every N.S.F. charge that I'd been bombarded with.
If I were you I would hound Apple until they coughed up the dough-re-mi. Go straight to the top if you must...make a racket.

It's hard for any company with such technologically advanced products and so many employees to have every employee adequately trained and every process working perfectly, Apple is no exception.
Call Apple, be polite, be cheerful, state that you have a problem, present the facts (dates #s, et al.), then nicely ask them to set everything straight.
Remember that the person on the other end of the phone is a human being just like you: they will not react positively if you don't. The old saying: you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Although I never understood why anyone would want to catch flies, I prefer to swat them... ;)
In an ideal world these mistakes wouldn't happen. Sadly, nobody asks ME how to make the world a perfect place...

Good news. It's nice to hear that Apple is a company that cares about their clients. Unfortunately, there still exists out there those who don't.
In most cases, I'm polite for as cyborgsam said, "honey and flies...", but sometimes life doesn't run that tickety boo. Sometimes you have to be the windshield and not the fly.

Contest the charges and let your credit card company deal with the error and get your money back at the same time. Hopefully you used your credit card, not your bank card?

Is this really worth making a huge blogpost about? Apple made a mistake, it happens. ALL companies make mistakes every now and then. You work it out and deal with it. I could see you writing this if they refused to return your money and were stealing from you but they recognized their error and returned your money. That should be the end of it. No need to publicly bash a company because of a minor customer service error.
If I wrote a blogpost every time a company screwed up I'd have a thousand posts.
I'm not blogging, I'm posting on a forum of apple users.
As a company that supposedly prides itself on customer service it was an unexpected disappointment, I'm not Apple hater and equally publicly post positive things when they go well.
There was no reason not to post a thread about it, what happened was out of order, I don't thing I've actually ever been as angry with a company as I was with Apple over this issue.
A customer service error that left me practically broke just before pay day is a pretty serious one and something that warranted the thread in my opinion.

That's what blogging is all about—to vent!!! It's not to post formal articles, etc.—this isn't the NY Times, it's just a blog. Hence, the meaning weblog. It's just something that we choose to rant about to other Apple users, like plugz mentioned. Nothing more, nothing less. Perhaps had his problem not been resolved, then many people (who have already done so) would offer their advice/opinion on the matter.
I know EXACTLY how you feel, Kevin, as believe me, now that I am working strictly freelance, I, too am on a budget. I have to be. When I had a job and receiving a paycheck every 2 weeks, I could be a bit more frivolous, but those days are gone (until I find a job).
As far as using your bank card in lieu of your credit card. Well, some people don't have credit cards with extremely high limits, and if you're like me, I prefer to use my debit card BEFORE I use my credit card so I don't have to pay it back. I much prefer to use the cash unless I have to. I got into a lot of trouble years and years ago with credit card debt, and I don't want to go there again. But that's for another post all together....

Ok, they've won me over...
They've offered me compensation for the charge for going over my authorised overdraft.
Apple all is forgiven.
They've admitted it was all their fault and the customer service is back to their legendary levels again.

It's a Visa card and backed up by their protection, also my bank are pretty hot on that kind of thing. I've never had a problem.

didn't you just have a problem here where you ended up with overdraft charges because someone incorrectly debited your account? i know you got them to pay for it eventually, but you had to deal with more than just getting the charges reversed. and you probably had to deal with each institution you had a bounced transaction for as well, if there were any (and even if there weren't, there *could* have been). if it was a credit card, you'd only have to deal with apple and the CC co.
i'm with nate, debit cards have their uses, but there are downsides, too. especially if you don't have strong cashflow and can afford to cover mistakes like this until they're corrected.
again, not putting the blame on you in the situation you had to deal with. that squarely falls on apple. but using CC vs debit card is the difference between shuffling the CC's cashflow/assets vs shuffling your cashflow. it's always safer to let the CC co deal with the cash issue when there's a problem or dispute instead of your checking account.
everyone's in a different situation with their finances. i was in a much different situation 15-20 years ago and didn't own any CCs at the time. but if you're able to financially handle the temptation, they're a much better way to manage money in certain circumstances.

But I couldn't use my credit cards as they were maxed out after I just paid fees for a professional qualification that was about $3000. Even if I'd have given a CC number I'd have still been slapped with an over limit fee and interest. As nothing was supposed to be taken from the account if I complied with the rules, which I did, there shouldn't have been an issue.
Either way it's resolved now, but the point is it should never have happened in the first place no matter what card was used.
Despite what I though Apple came through and delivered the legendary CS they're famous for. It took a while and yes they made an error but they called me and sorted it out without me actually having to write a major complaint out when they realised what had happened.
They called me again today to offer a solution and I'll be talking to them more over the coming weeks to draw it to a close.

I'm so glad that this has been resolved for you. I have never had nothing but quality customer service from Apple. Therefore, it doesn't surprise me that they're doing the right thing and taking the initiative to get it resolved for you. Good for them!!! I would like to see Microsoft do the same. Not that I have ever had any issues with MS because I haven't had a PC in over 8 years. Eeeek!

Haha, yes avoiding PC land does help...
I've got to use them at work unfortunately, but overall XP is a damn solid OS nowadays, it's a shame Vista hasn't been as successful as it should have been and is such a resource hog, I installed Vista on my MacBook via Boot Camp to test it out and the battery life dropped from over 4 hours to less than 2 hours of usage.
Apple have actually excelled themselves, the benefit I'm getting is actually going to be worth $140 way more than the $60 bank charge I encountered.
Top service again, I can't complain, it's interesting to watch the sudden speed up of switchers in my circle of friends too, I know more people with Mac's now than i do with PC's... The ones that got their first Mac a year ago are already thinking about adding a MacBook or getting an iPhone. The halo effect is clearly working.
