Natural Wonder

This is just something I did for fun. It isn't my favorite, but I like the style. It would look great on a shirt (some of it, maybe just the tree and the blue moose). :D

I think your design is very attractive. It certainly appeals to me. The request you've made is a little too far-reaching, though. No one can accurately predict a person's potential for success in any field based on one example of their work in it. I can tell you, though, that any graphic designer will always need to "work a bit harder." For one thing, the marketplace, and the tools we use to create media for it, are always changing! It's tough enough just to keep up with that, let alone to keep the creative juices flowing. Why not stick around here and pick up as many pointers as you can as you continue to learn?

I believe the white tree comes from a set of brushes available for free downloading online; I've used them myself, so I realize its outlines are set in stone if you use it only as it comes. If I were you, though, I'd take it through Illustrator to add more to the bottom so it bleeds out at the bottom of your layout. The "floating" look of it now is distracting.

The moon effect is interesting, but I'm not 100% sure it works -- maybe only 85% :-) I guess it looks a little too mechanical, and takes something away from the otherwise nice triangular composition of the rest of the layout. Notice how the bare branches with the crows on it points upward to the top of the white tree where there are splotches of black, as does the big crow in the foreground. The lower right fern frond provides the base of the triangle on that side. The little moon throws that off. You might consider pulling the whole design together by using a large circle in a subtle (70 or 80 percent) screen of the background brown color, slightly off-center to the left, and up a bit.

Good luck!

That "little moon" wasn't actually meant to be a moon. I took it out of the final document because it didn't fit the mood. It was actually kind of like the f of the Flash logo with a white dot on the bottom. The tree is actually a picture I got from a website about a year ago, I cannot seem to recall what the website was called though. I never really got the person's permission to use their images. I've never used them for commercial use though, so I'm sure it's ok. I do want to find the website again to check if I can use them though.

My original image didn't show the whole document, so I changed it. If there is anything you don't like with the new one, feel free to tell me. If I could (and I can, but i'm too lazy :D) I would just have a moon (the one you recommended) with the tree and the 2 mooses (I don't think this is the correct way to pluralize moose, but whatever). Also, I don't have Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. I use Pages for my graphic design. I would like to try out Quark Xpress, photoshop is too confusing and doesn't really serve the right purpose for my type of design (from what I have seen of photoshop). If you find any graphic design applications I can demo, please send me the link! :D

It's not an either-or. You still have to work hard if you pursue graphic design.

This looks like a set of brushes, as Mara already stated. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Its just a collage of photos with their backgrounds taken out. The tree took a HORRIBLY LONG TIME to take the background out of. I had just found the images online and decided to make something out of them. I hope that isn't illegal, I can't remember the website name, I got the photos about a year ago. I have never used them for commercial use, so I think it is probably ok. I hope. :D

You have a well-developed eye for a 9th grader, but this style and composition is a little generic, whereas your photo collage with the green leaves is dynamic and strong.

I started in with visual communications at your age as well, working on the layout of my school newspaper, but it took me until 20 to realize that "Graphic Design" was what I wanted to do.

Remember, that as Graphic Artists, we don't get to sit back and draw pictures all day. I noticed you indicated your specialty as "illustration." In today's day and age, you kind of have to be a jack-of all-trades. Remember that at your age, you may enjoy illustrating and composing, but there is a lot more to it once you get into the working world. We are first and foremost Problem Solvers. We find visual solutions based on our client's needs. I would highly recommend getting to know some designers in your area and seeing one on one, how the business works.

But bottom line: You do have a great eye. That is something many designers go their whole career without. You already have that, so look into the business of design and see if it is right for you.

I'm quite sure that Graphic Design is what I want to do in life, I just can't pick a sub category. I placed myself in the illustration category because I wasn't sure which category I would be placed in. I think I am a something like a "Documentist", I'm not quite sure what to call it. Please, do tell me which sub-category is similar to what I create. I am not just a illustrator (in fact, I wouldn't even say i'm an illustrator at all). I enjoy all types of graphic design, I just don't have as much experience in some areas because I don't have the tools needed to grow in those areas. I use Pages from Apple's iWork for all of my documents. I wish I had the chance to try using Quark Xpress or something like it instead. Pages IS limited, but it works for most things. :D I love creating logos as well, and all kinds of layouts and would like to work for Apple someday, if not somewhere else, creating layouts or documents. :D

You don't necessarily get to pick a 'sub category' unless you are known for one particular thing (and have a lot of recognition under your belt!), and that takes time. You start out needing to do a little of everthing as a production artist. Retouching photos, organizing file systems, color correcting, drawing clipping paths, etc.

Forget Quark. Download the 30 day free trial of InDesign from adobe's website:

And above all, keep at it! We'll be here when you start doing internships. :) Keep us posted!

I use Pages (from Apple's iWork '08). It's not the best for graphic design, and it isn't meant for it, but it is very simple and easy to use for all of my little school projects. Photoshop confuses me, and I haven't been able to try a lot of other applications. :( I would like to try Quark Xpress though. Downloading the demo at the moment...its taking FOREVER to install
