Need some help exporting InDesign into PDF with non printing

Hey guys...

Slightly annoying problem on my hands...

I want to export my Indesign file into a PDF format, now that sounds simple enough BUT, I have some non-printing objects in my Indesign file which I WANT to show on the PDF but I don't want to print. Following?

For example, I want the client to view my PDF file in all its glory but some clients have very crappy printers so I want the PDF to only print the necessary items.

Can anyone please help me with this? I click on the Include non printing objects inside the export dialogue box and I've set a non-printing attribute to the objects I don't want to print so I don't know what else I'm doing wrong.

Thanx for any help,

JC

I don't think that the non-printing IDD item attributes are capable of transferring over to the PDF file, but could be wrong.

This guy would know for sure though:

You can turn on and off printing of layers or of objects but you have to select print if you are making a pdf

I use Acrobat Professional for this along with InDesign. I believe it's the only way to do this.

Forget about printing and non-printing objects in InDesign for this purpose. The non-printing/printing designation is all done in Acrobat. In InDesign keep the printing and non-printing items on separate layers.

Export your document as a PDF. In the export dialog box check, "Create Acrobat Layers" under options. You need to set the compatibility of your PDF as "Acrobat 6 (PDF 1.5)" or higher in the upper right-hand corner.

Open the PDF in Acrobat. On the left you'll want to click on the layers icon. Opening up the layers you'll see the names of the layers exported from your InDesign file. Right clicking or control clicking on a Mac will open up the properties dialog box.

The layer properties dialog box will allow you to set a number of states for the layers in PDF. You can even designate a layer to never show but always print. And, set the layer that shows to never print. Once you you set the properties for each layer save the document and you're done.

Notes: I have made 3 InDesign documents for this purpose. One document for printing, one for showing but non-printing, and the third to house the two. The third document has two layers. It has a show layer containing the non-printing document and a print layer contains the printing document. It makes it really easy to set up in Acrobat that way.

Next, if you don't have a Creative Suite with Acrobat Professional, consider buying a ScanSnap from somewhere like NewEgg.com. It comes with Acrobat Professional 8. The scanner is so cool for scanning receipts and bills for your business. It's cheaper than buying the latest version of Acrobat Professional itself.
