New Company business card - Critique
john17wi (5 points) | Sun, 2008-10-19 16:16Hello all,
First let me say I've been watching what happens here for awhile now, and I'm very impressed and inspired by the work and dialogue you share.
The business card I'm asking for critique on today is one that I'm creating for an upstart business my sister-in-law is currently involved in. The company itself is in the consulting business for land/property development for commercial industry. This would include everything from land assesment, soil testing, demolition, hiring contractors, builders, etc.
Because they are involved in so many aspects of the process, I didn't feel any one logo could clearly covey that. I decided to keep it simple with just type and bold colors (which can change...I'm not married to the green I picked).
I opted for the vertical presentation to make it stand out from the norm.
I'd greatly appreciate your feedback on what I have at this point and what could be improved upon.
Thanks!
John

I have to say, it is difficult to come up with a logo that can identify a company that deals with so many things, however, it is a real challenge that could produce really nice results. If i were in your shoes, i would attempt to design a logo for the company, maybe an abstract would be better for this kind of situations. Keep in mind that a logo doesn't have to have a shape, you can have a logo with only words, in your case choosing a font that goes more with the type of business this is, would be a much better idea. I don't think a serif font works here. It sure doesn't convey the idea of what the business is about.you don't want to choose a font just for the sake of choosing a font, it is going to look like you just placed it there for no particular reason. I guess what i'm trying to say is that every element in your design needs to have a purpose for having that particular shape/color/position/ etc. right now, it seems to me that many of those reasons are not clear or have not been considered. I'm sure that if you are able to come up with at least a few words that would best describe this business you would be able to come up with something that denotes much more meaning, think about the green: why green? what does the color green stand for? colors have meanings so you might want to consider which is the best pick. If you do decide to not have a particular shape associated with the name of the company, do choose a more unique font to add a more distinctive feel to the brand.
you do have something that says: "we streamline your development" that could work as a starting point, how about conveying this idea through the use of fonts, colors, placement of the elements? if the business is involved with a lot of different things, then maybe, its about the process and not so much about one of those things in particular, i'm just guessing.
I like the portrait orientation too, and the green goes with land developement but the association with a financial brochure will hint at something the business doesn't do. which may alienate a potential cuatomer rather than draw them in.
I too would try for a symbolic logo to accompany the text. Some people are more visual than informational, and most people remember visuals better. It seems to me that you're having trouble thinking of a logo and so are taking the easy way out because it's only for your sister in law. However there are many land developement companies out there, and they must have logos...
Consulting is such a joke anyway, I just consulted for you...that'll be $5k fee please LOL

At MooreWallace, we had an issue with press quality so they hired a quality consultant group to check it out.
after $5 million, 1 month of wandering around the plant aimlessly, and another 4-6 months to compile the results they told us, get ready...
-stack plates with slipsheets after processing
-don't remove slipsheets till the plates go on press
-get new equipment (which they never did)
LMAO I told em that much before the consultants! where's my share of the 5 mil?
