new font favorites?

archmedia's picture

When it comes to fonts, I see three categories
1- Old-reliables : self explanatory, they're reliable time and time again, and that gets proven every time you use one of them successfully and reliably (surprise surprise!)

2- Favorites : Also self explanatory, though sometimes it's for a week, sometimes a month, sometimes a year, but they always seem to fade away and rarely get used again until the time is right.

3- Random fonts : They're project dependant, you might happen to have them in a font collection or not, but this tends to be the font you wind up searching high and low for this "perfect font" just for one project, likely never to be used again. Ok, maybe to be used again, but not on a regular basis.

So i'm curious, as the topic says, what are people's three "new" favorite fonts over the last few weeks/months?

Mine (in no specific order)

1. Aviano (both serif and sans) (though Trajan is a good alternative)
2. Scriptina (and it's a freeby font)
3. Triplex (whole family)

hehe, good topic. mine have

hehe, good topic.
mine have to be:

Frutiger Condensed
Georgia (LOVE the numbers in Georgia!)
Helevtica Neue Ultra Light (I'm loving this one right now)

condensed

I've found myself using condensed sans faces (again) lately. Univers most recently, but Myriad Pro Condensed has been coming back to the top as well.

Over the past year or so, House's Tiki Holiday keeps getting selected for script needs. I try others, but for some reason it always seems to "fit" my stuff. I've found it to be pretty legible down to almost text-size if I add about 10% width and a little extra tracking. (Not normally something I like to do, but it seems to work in this case!)

My serif choices have been all over the map, though.

I'd have a hard time shoehorning my fonts into the 3 categories listed in the first post...

1. Garamond, Futura, Gill

1. Garamond, Futura, Gill Sans, Times, Verdana (I do lots of web stuff), Joana, Jenson
2. Everything from Emigre
3. Trajan, Trade Gothic

Do i really have to choose one in each category?
1. Gill Sans
2. NotCaslon
3. Trajan

no, just new ones...

New fonts

Some new discoveries over the last few weeks are:

1. FS Albert (looks lovely in print and online)
2. Kautiva (an interesting new twist on a display Sans)
3. Chocolate (don't normally like script faces but this one is lovely)

(only three?)

Hi there.
This is way unfair, only three fonts eh eh ;).
1. Myriad (whole family)
2. Georgia (my e-mail font)
3. Garamond

hmmm

Ive found myself using the Minion pro family a lot lately. The serifs really appeal to my tastes. For a sans, i would have to stick with Gill or Helvetica Neue which seems to solve everything (except creative solutions).

Gill Sans

It's weird but over the last few years I have completely gone off Gill Sans. I guess mostly because there are so many nice alternatives around now, especially from some of the new smaller new type foundries.

A few hundred pounds/dollars spent on getting an appropriate font is money well spent.

Hmmmm.....

Just naming 3 will be hard, but I think i've got some....

Myriad is always good. I assume I'm not the only one who's noticed that's apple's font...except for Mac and iPhone interfaces.

There's this cool one called Mamma Gamma that I got somewhere for free. I like it.

And finally, there'd have to be Extra Ornamental. They're all free except for Myriad...do a google.

archmedia's picture

you might like...

you might like Andover, it's somewhat similar to "mamma gamma" but has some nice differences. I've used this font several times quite successfully, i just like the numbers more in Andover then in the Mamma Gamma font.

thx for the post..
