US unveils (really crappy) anti-smoking graphics.
Graphic pictures depicting the possible consequences of tobacco use are soon to adorn packets of cigarettes sold in the US, health officials say.

these are our (brazilian) pictures at cigar boxes:

yes I'm brazilian xD
Hum... And I thought our images in Canada were bad!
Wow, now every time they smoke, people will be invoking this results, therefore smoking is even more dangerous now. Maybe pharmacy industry are promoting these new packaging. Absolutely strange! Why don't they have the cigarette sellers dressed as Dracula lecturing the smokers!... or something! Maybe they could also include disccount cupons in each box for your inminent burial.
The Brazilian ones are waaaaay more convincing.
I think people will become de-sensitized to the images after a while, though. Smoking is a tough addiction to break.
These have been around in the UK for a while now - planted on both sides of the packet.
Looking at the submissions, it seems like they made a student contest out of it...not design students, middle school students.
If it doesn't sell, it isn't creative.
Yes - quite some disturbing photos - I wonder if they work.
I kinda find adding these pictures to the packings a bit stupid - though not half as stupid as the act of smoking itself.

Well I have unfortunately been a smoker for years, but have to say that the images and messages don't do anything to detract people from doing so. If they were really serious about it, they would just make it completely illegal. I guess the ever increasing VAT is too much for governments to lose.
This is a joke?

Bah, we;ve had these for years in Canada and I still smoked for about 5 years before quitting. They aren't effective at all.

These images have been used in several countries without any impact (at least, issued from this type of campaign). In Canada we had those for more than 20 years
Can't be 20 years. I've smoked for 17 years, and it was only in the last 5 - 6 years that they appeared. They certainly didn't have them when I first started.

Denis Leary used to do a stand-up routine about how you could call cigarettes "Death in a Box" (or something like that) and it wouldn't deter smokers. Then someone actually brought out a brand called "Death Cigarettes"...

As a former smoker, I can tell you it doesn't make any difference. It's an addiction. Do heroin users sit around and say "Gee we could catch AIDs from a dirty needle"? No. They feed the habit. Same with cigarettes. I'd recommend any smokers on the board quit right now, because - believe it or not - after a couple weeks you don't miss it all. At least I don't. That was the most surprising thing to me - I never get the urge.
I would add one tiny asterisk, however. The day the doctor gives me 6 months to live - I'm heading right to the store to get a carton and I'm going to smoke 'em up!
Ha... just kidding.
Maybe.
