only thing i see "positive" about this, is that they didn't include a way to download pictures from my camera directly (without a 3rd party hardware)...

if they'd done that, i would have sold mine and bought the new one!!!

It's dissapointing. I would have bought a new one as well. I'm not sure the price jump justifies it without being able to download.

I'm hoping something comes out to rectify connecting it directly. I often use mine for data transfer so this would be great. I was going to give my old one to my husband and get a new one. Hopefully by the time I can afford it this feature will be added. He only needs it for music so it's perfect for us. This would open up a new area for mobile photography. There are probably other devices that do this but hey do they play music?

:D

agree, too bad you can't connect your camera directly with a USB or Firewire cable. :(

Larusson, if you want a porta

Larusson, if you want a portable hard drive to listen music, AND view your pictures, DO NOT buy a Photo Ipod!

The Epson P2000 has a VGA screen (640x480), can open raw images from several cameras, can play videos(MPEG4), MP3's, has a slot for compact flash and Sd ... its cost $499, with a 40gb hd. It will be available in november...

i'm guessing there is no need for any extra hardware to be able to download images from digicameras directly to the iPod, since the USB is there, the CPU and Hard Disk is there. what else is needed? i suspect that the photoiPod's next firmware might simply enable this new function.

that Epson device will give a bit of healthy competition to Apple. ;)

Usb to Usb communication is not as easy as Firewire to Firewire...

Yes, I hope that Apple will do a competitive product to the Epson one... still, for the same price, the screen is 4times bigger (and sharper!) , you can see VGA videos, download your pictures, and preview RAW files... Well, the only problem some could have is that the product does not have a fruit as logo

All the ooohhhs, and ahhhhs o

All the ooohhhs, and ahhhhs over the $499 Photo iPod just has me baffled.

$499 for something with a barely visible 2 inch screen for the purpose of viewing photos????

For $500 more you could just get a really nice iBook. I understand the size factor, but cmon... $500??? Most digital cameras already have a 2 inch LCD screen anyway, so all you really need is a few extra CF cards.
