But in all seriousness don't many of you see web design opening WAAY up and getting crazy cool as soon as we don't have to support IE5/6 and have the ability to use pngs with alpha channel where ever we please. It boggles my mind.

Yes, but apparently MS is working on a new IE seriously as far as I heard. I think even they realised that the difference is becoming embarrasing. Just the fact that they still don't have tabs and they still don't support CSS fully blows my mind.

baseboard is a mac design hub with many many talented members. heh.. we've been around long enough to have a few virtual fistfights (a mark of a longtime communty), so if you visit.. be prepared to find many odd things in the "off-topic" forum. guests can visit, but not post.. if you want to see some killer desktops, visit the galleries.
i'm not a designer, but a learner who plays PST there. there are many other skills represented among the membership.
I piggy-backed my way to the blog and thought I would try something gutsy and different and just go ahead and register to the forum. What's different is I have very little knowlege of design, colors, graphics, etc... just about most of what's here, I also think I have another strike against me and that is I have and use a PC, not good?
I dont know how much I can contribute, I CAN be optimistic since I dont know most of what goes on, but I can tell you I will try to contribute and not just be a lurker.
So, Do I have a snowballs chance... :?:
Oh, and I like my Palm T3 and I dabble in programming.

I hope you're not expecting some computing wiz, because that I am not. I'm currently studying C and tinkering with programming for the Palm. It's more of an interest and something to keep me thinking. With the occasional help of a few nice people I've met on the Net, I'm really enjoying it. If it takes me a few years to get to where I want to be - I'll be a few years older anyway.
At any rate, I look forward to grasping what I can. BTW: This is the first time I've been mistaken for a guy, but again this is the Net. 8) (really- not a problem)

Hi, I'm a Graphic designer from Mexico. I read every day the blog and I think that is very usefull. Sorry but my english is very bad... I hope that someone can helpme if someday I need express an idea... =)
Hi and be welcomed! I think you're the only member from Mexico. It's great to have such a multicultural community.
We have members from all parts of the US (Massachusetts, Boston, Phoenix, New Orleans, Seattle, Wisconsin, Cincinnati, Raleigh, NY, California, Nebraska, Rhode Island, Columbia, Alabama, Washington) Canada, UK, Belgium, Denmark, Iceland, Hungary, South Africa, Singapore, Guatemala, Bahrain etc.
I'm very excited to know that we can receive so many different views and opinions on a certain subject. Don't worry about your English. For many of the people on this forum, English is a second or third language, so you're not alone, so you might need to guess what I'm trying to say sometimes as well. My spelling sucks. :) Thanks god we do have some folks from native English speaking countries to help us out.

Hello James. Welcome! Nice sites. Another blogger user? :) It's a pity you don't have the logos up yet on your site. That's what I dig the most.
Only 2 things I don't like about some of your work, otherwise it was very nice!
1) The web site that blew my eardrums out with some looped music that was poorly edited and had no way to shut it off that I could find. Music on a web site is just plain bad.
2) Your work, where is it? What I mean is that I came to your site to see your work. By doing so, I know that I will be viewing .jpg images. What I didn't expect was to be seeing tiny little preview images, with full size images that weren't much larger. You should be proud of your work (from what little I could read and see, it looked very nice), so you should SHOW IT OFF!!! Focus less on the presentation of the work, and more on the work. As a perspective client or agency, I don't really care about the fancy graphics and animation, etc. on the site as much as I want to see what you can do! (I'm speaking of course of the print work)

I appreciate the feedback. Some of the flash stuff was done awhile ago, so it's a little primitive. I'm just finishing up a course on flash animation, so my portfolio site kinda bi-product of what I've learned.
I'll have to size up the previews when I overhaul the site again. I'm planning on redoing it in CSS, so I'll make the previews bigger.

Looking over this thread and realised I buggered up never posted an introduction....How terribly rude.
From Ireland and have been doing this design lark for about 7 years. Hopped between disciplines like a rabid bunny before landing the current work doing freelance interface and icon design.
I'm part of the new breed of people without an office or permananet home as I've been wandering the earth for the past two years working from coffee shops and leafy parks. (Currently in Melbourne)
Amazing once you realise it's a tangible career even though most people are perplexed when you try and explain what you actually do. The only downside is the lack of a good stationery cupboard.
Came to Creative Bits from Jim's link on another forum and have never looked back. Doesn't take itself too seriously, great design tips, nice mix of people in the forums.

I'm not "really" new. I don't have access to the e-mail address for my old user name any more, so i couldn't change the password. So Joshua has become jSchwa.
If you want, I can fix it for you, although jSchwa is a nice nick i think.
I think I'll stick with jSchwa, there's no reason to bother with looking back.
Hi, I'm joecab, longtime graphic designer / production / whatever, still clinging tightly to Mac OS 9 for work even though I use OS X for everything else. Oh, Quark, when didst thou foresake me? (Oh yeah when you dragged your ass on coming out with the OS X version ... and I still remember when you didn't support Apple's switch to PowerPC chips way back when!)
Welcome joecab! You're probably the last of the few still working on OS9. It must feel kinda retro cool, like riding a '67 chevy! :)
I thought a lot of people were still using Quark 4.11. And I love Illustrator 8 and Freehand 8. *clutching them tightly* Plus I do work for a number of publications that STILL haven't switched. (Some are still on Quark 3.3!) I'm anxious to take the ID leap, though -- Adobe CS will soon be on its way to me.
So do I say I'm still using OS 9 if I'm actually starting up in OS X and accessing Quark through the Classic environment?
Hi All,
I saw a blurb on MacMinute, and though I would check out the site... very nice.

I'm Thomas (Designer, Bremen, Germany). Even if I am a PC user i visit this site daily for getting the best tips on the web - thanks a lot iraszl/ivan
Nice to see you Thomas! I don't think there are many from Germany here. Our international community is just getting wider. Hope to see your opinions especially in the Critique section.
I've already posted a bit on the forum and commented in some articles so I thought you might all like to know who the hell I am.... I'm nobody really..
I'm a 25 year old graphic designer currently working at a screen printing shop in Canada and freelancing a bit on the side. Trying to gain some decent experience/capital so I can eventually start up my own graphics and web design studio.
I've been "playing" with photoshop since version 3.1 or so and been working professionally as a designer for about 3 years. I went to a local design school a few years ago but am finding that school is no substitute for practical experience.
I'm also a part time musician and write horrible noisy music. I want to be a famous rock star one day but have no illusions about the practicality/possiblity of that.. especially since my married life may cut into my "groupie" time. (getting married in June)
Yeah.. nice to meet you!

Congrats on your marriage. It's the best thing in life.
I'd like to hear that noisy music one day. :D
There are a few samples here. The newest track is unfinished... vocals should be recorded as soon as I get my equipment back from the promoter who put on my last show. I had a bit too much fun after the show and all my stuff ended up at his place. ;)

How are all you fine people doing? I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I am new to CB and am loving the things I see on here.
I work for a firm based in Lincoln, NE. We do Interactive development for different companies and clients for touch screen stations(kiosks).
We have developed our own proprietary software called Nanopoint that handles ALL media you can think of. Feel free to ask me any questions you might be curious about.
~Gody
What you do is somethig quite unique. I hope you gonna stay to share your views. Just one question for a start. Why touchscreens are not in use in kindergardens? Wouldn't it be about time to do that? I mean the earlier the better, right?
Hello Ivan,
I would agree but the problem is the company that I work for has a pretty high per hour rate that even some fortune 500 companies shy away from at times. Not be boastful but we produce some of the best work in the field as stated by our clients.... I am sure we would love to do some work for the education sector if they are willing to pay the bill :) So far we have done some kiosks for a University but that is all thus far.
I don't come up with the price quotes fortunately..... hehehe. I just make things look cool and snazzy for the client :)
I do not see myself leaving. I have been looking for an online community that could satisfy my hunger for the latest/greatest tips and tricks in the design industry and just spending a few minutes last week on your site got me hooked. I also subscribe to your RSS feeds :)
Just so you know... what got me hooked was your Photoshop tips section. I eat and breathe Photoshop and am always looking for new things to learn about Photoshop. I found some tricks that I was not aware of and when I saw those I knew that this site would be worth my time.
I think the site looks/feels VERY professional and the time I have spent so far on the site has been nothing less than VERY REFRESHING to say the least.
I am very positive that I will only see bigger and better things from the time I spend at creativebits in the future. Keep up the good work sir :)
I LOVE THE SITE and am going to STAY :)
Thanks for the kind words. Many members sent me tips, so it's a joint effort really. The site will be always work in progress, simplifying and fine tuning based on the community feedback. Currently I'm fine tuning the two themes that are available here, because they have some small problems. Also, the underlying engine is going to be updated to fix minor issues.
I want to add one item to the wish list of things that I would like to see different with the site.... this is just my opinion.... what do you think about new posts appearing as the first post of the first page instead of at the bottom of the last page. I don't know if others have brought up this issue but I don't find it very user-friendly. I would like to hear your reasoning on making the forums posts the way they are now. Please explain.
Originally I wanted to do that, but I chickened out. I thought people will hate it.
This is the traditional way for the flow of comments. If new posts were to appear first it would be easy to follow if there are just one or two new posts, but with more comments it would be very weird to read from the bottom of the page all the way up.
However when there are more than one pages the currect set-up doesn't work very well. Even clicking the "x new" links will not take you to the latest comment as it supposed to. I'm working on a solution for that.
On the other hand blog posts are in reverse chronological order and people don't have problem with them.
Well I don't blame you..... you really must satisfy the majority. Do you think you could post something regarding this and see what people have to say if you don't want to risk losing subscribers. I think it may not be the norm but hey Apple didn't want to stick to the norm, they wanted to be different.... wouldn't you agree :)
So if at all possible I think it would be interesting to come up with a experiment/poll/forum to ask your subscribers how we can improve this to give the best possible experience.
In general I agree about conforming to the norm but who knows... CB might be the one to break that norm and introduce a new norm. What do you think? :)
Oh and by the way.... are you based out of Bahrain? My dad used to work in Saudi Arabia - I went to visit him once and I visited Bahrain as well. Beautiful city.
OK. We will do a poll on that.
Beautiful is not the right word for Bahrain, sunny would be more appropriate. ;) If you're around next time let me know!
Oh I am excited to see what others think. I checked the polls in the last 2 mins and they have been in my favor... hehehehe. I am just being a goof... but I think its almost even so far but lets see what the outcome is :)
Thank you for taking the time to put up a poll. I appreciate the effort :)
Oh and I have plans on stopping by the Middle East on my way home (India) for vacation sometime in the near future. I will definitely let you know if I am in the area :) So were you born and brought up there? Tell me a little more about your ethnic background if you don't mind sharing.
I was born and brought up in South India and then ended up in the US for my Under Grad education and then ended up finding a job here after a lot of struggle :) thats my life in a nut shell.
I'm Hungarian: Half german, half Russian. :) I live in Bahrain now.
Hello!
I've been reading your blog here for a couple months now and when I realized I was checking your blog daily, I finally decided to join. I'm a graphic design student in college, so your site makes for a great place to learn new tips and tricks and to learn what the industry is really like. Bravo!
You're the reason CB was born. I want to help everyone to save time and produce better work. There is much to do in life besides work, so we need to learn all we can to be more productive and more expensive on the job market. Hope to see you stay for many more month! ;)

Hello Everyone,
I've been watching CB and enjoying it for a while now. I want a 12" Powerbook but currently have a 4 year old HP Tower (PC obvously, it's too ugly and slow to be a Mac.) :c( Anyway, I figured I'd post here because you guys probably want me to.

Hi! Thanks for intro post. Hope you get a Mac soon! :D
Love your avatar! Doesn't the christian church has the best logo/symbol ever?
Oh, you're welcome, thank you for the great articles! I enjoy reading your tips. (I can't wait to get a mac so I can try out all your mac tips...)
Yes, I think the church had some great symbols (especially the Cross.) Most of the symbols are really simple and get thier "point" across. As far as meaning behind a symbol/logo goes you can't ask for more!

Hi im Albs,
Im a web designer in the Uk,
I can remember how I came across this site but its fantastic and have been reading it daily, I find the people on here friendly and so ive come to post.
I love the tips on here, ive recently got a second hand 12" ibook and so far I love it to bits...it comes in handy x-browser checking and being so easy to use.
Hi Albs! You've got quite an unusual name, at least for me. Thanks for joining!
Hello folks, my name is Mitch, and I work & live in West London.
Love the forum, been browsing as a guest for a while now, can't wait to start posting.
What evoked me to join, was the fact that it seems to have a real balance in peoples views, which are neither pretentious or pampering like some 'other' forums out there.
Cracking work Ivan.
The only bad thing is I have even less time now!!!! ;)
Welcome. I have witnessed some forums are elitists, while others are very focused on one specific geographic location. Again, others are completely slow. The cb forums need work technically too, but I think the community is exceptional!
Time? Yes. That's something we all have very little I guess.
Yes exactly Ivan, that is what drew me to this forum.
Lets hope it keeps the ethos it has, and we can all learn from such a varied range of users, without having to watch what we type for being looked down upon.
Hopefully I'll be able to start posting, when I can catch a few spare moments.
Keep up the good work!

I have been a member for a while, but I have been extremely busy so I don't get to come here alot....I am an RSS person and not too much has been coming to my newsreader from here lately....I understand Ivan is a busy man too....Ivan really is THE MAN....I don't see how he does it...personal responses to each person....I have been impressed with Ivan and this site since the first day I visited.
But a little about me....I am all about creative resources...if you want to know where to find some good free stock photos, photoshop brushes, fonts, photoshop custom shapes, or a specific tutorial, etc... just ask me and I will be happy to share my secrets. The internet is full of resources that, if taken advantage of, can give any creative an edge. Creativebits is full of that kind of info as well. And one of these days I might finish building my own website...
Just one more note before I leave....this community is amazing because I don't recall seeing any real ugly disagreements...everyone gets along great and is here to just help each other out...it is an amazing community composed of some of the brightest creatives in the world...I consider myself privileged to be a part of it...

By the way, did you know your trip to Las Vegas could be tax deductible?

Hi all,
Just joined a few days ago! I'm a graphic designer based in Bangalore, India who specializes in ebook and POD cover design, web graphics, cartoons, comics, illustration and logos. I was actually trained as an architect...but doing cartoons and graphics is more fun...though not as remunerative (sigh!) I freelance from home and have been doing so for quite a few years now. I mostly work in Photoshop and use Xara X for vector work...though I like doodling around with programs in general.
I'm now exploring the possibilities of using cartoons and comics strips in corporate communications. The possibilities seem interesting, if one has a good HR team to supply inputs.
Happy to be here!
Cheers

Hey everyone.
I am a graphic designer / web developer based in Washington State. I have 7 years of industry experience.
I have gotten a ton of help from the forum over the years, so I though it is time to start contributing. I am looking forward to lending some insight in the design/logo/packaging industry.

I've been cruising the net for info and stumbled across this site which I immediately liked. I've learn't loads already just following the critique page. Can someone tell me the best way too go about learning how too make web pages. I've found many tutorials explaining how too make simple html websites using notepad, would this be a good start? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Lately we've been posting blogs rather infrequently, but hopefully I will find more time in the future.
Just found you guys. Wish I had a long resume to put down here BUT don't. I am a mom who works from home. I started my business about a year ago and just now seeing it take off. I can fly around Photoshop but just now learning InDesign. Have used Quark in past. Looking forward to checking out everything!
Have a great one

i'm Anthony, I'm more a musician than a visual artist, but I like to draw and whatnot, I'd like to design covers for future albums if the coast guard gives me time to crank one out.
I have worked in the design field for over 15 years so far and counting. Started off with offset-litho printing, did some cutting and pasting for real but now can't keep away from my Mac! Just to reiterate this is a great site, still learning lots from you guys and posting some constructive critism when I can.
I'm Flo. i like animation and movie.
I'm a Sr AD / Interactive Designer at an ad agency in Austin, Texas. Been in the biz for about 16 years now and still like it all.
Guitarist (instrumentalist mainly) for about 24 years and a Magic Castle Magician member for about 2.
Put all that together and I'm pretty good at parties :-`
Glad to have found the forum
All right! welcome to all the newbies to your new house in the internet....

Hi, this is Rey from Canberra Australia.
Have been doing graphic design through Macs for ages but this is the first time I bought my personal imac for home-use so I can exercise more creative freedom at home. I have special interest in typography, print publication, visual arts and travel.
I'm excited for my new membership at CB. Thanks...:) /rey
Hello all,
This is TJ reporting in from Texas. I'm a rebel PC user (I know bad bad), but not to worry, we're switching to macs at work soon. I work as a graphic designer at a company that licenses and distributes anime and I illustrate on my own time. I'm a bit late in introducing myself seeing as how I found the critiques forum first!
Hopefully I'll have some work to show you guys and gals soon.
Oh and my site is being redesigned so excuse the mess...
I've been reading this blog and lurking through the critqiues (which are usually quite good and helpful) for awhile now. I saw this post and figured i should finally sign up :)
My work is here http://www.nfxdesign.com. Please be nice or my mom will get mad :(

Found this site via an article on About.com. Oh joy! Yes! Another place where I can ask questions and learn stuff. I'm a student in the Graphic Design BFA program at IADT Seattle (actually in Tukwila). It's a 4-years-in-3 program, 11 week quarters with 2 weeks between. I'm in my 7th quarter. And I'm an "older" student. Already have a BA in English Lit, it's more than 30 years old. Always had some interest in graphic design, finally decided to do something about it. So. I use a Mac by preference, although I also have a PC. Very much still learning, trying to figure things out. Use Illustrator and Photoshop semi-competently; also InDesign. Right now taking the one digital video class I have to take, learning Final Cut Pro.
Will be checking out the critiques because I know they will be useful. At some point will post some art.
Thanks!
Hi everybody! I was reading and hangin' here for more than 7months, just to know how you're breathing :D joke
I'm 24 year old designer, originally from Croatia, EU, but I live and work in México. I will try to be more active with comments and post my work for critique.
that's all for now.

Hello, zagadka here, from NYC. I do everything a bit, multimedia/graphic design/illustration. Glad to have found this website.
I'm Natalie - I'm sort of new.
Hai!
I'm a pre-press / graphic designer for a small print company. I enjoy long walks on the beach, the color orange and uh....save tree.
life is great; without it, you'd be dead.
That entertained me.

Natalie, next time I'm in Charm City, I'll holler "Save tree!" If you hear me, holler back. We'll do lunch -- that's if Baltimore's Finest don't drag me off in chains first!

My name's Rick. In addition to being a full time Mass Comm. student (specializing in Communication Design), I am also a small business owner working with predominately collaborative and social media.
That being said, design is my second love.
I'm looking forward to learning from everyone's collective knowledge.

Hello, I'm Dan, a young web dev/designer. I'm mostly an XHTML/CSS guy, but I also develop WP themes (now over 100 and counting!) and do the occasional jQuery effect or two on a site. I've stumbled across this site a few times the past month or two and figured I might as well join and make some new friends. :)
I am currently working on my self promotion. :( ugh. I know bare basic little bit of Dream weaver. I am working on my website- The portfolio page menu and top graphics only show up when the page is refreshed.
Anyone know why?
Also, any feedback on the site? I need constructive criticism please!
