Obama-Brand Irony
YoungZM (658 pencils) | Thu, 2011-10-20 01:19You probably have an opinion about spec work that may or may not coincide with someone you know, but I feel anyone you talk to may find this fairly ironic. A job poster that isn't creating any paying jobs. See for the full story below:

I see and agree with what the article is saying, It is highly ironic AND with a budget like that - seems extremely bizarre that they'd try and wangle free design for such a purpose - I hope it's something that's been overlooked and people are accordingly redfaced in retrospect. I suspect that this isn't the case though and is pure negligence.
I would be all for it, if it was the branding for the re-election campaign that he was trying to cadge free design for - as at least for once it wouldn't be the old story of firing money at the age old problem of looking good in the public eye, and could be an organic process of a designer designing for a cause he/she felt strongly about. It's arguable that any designer, regardless of political viewpoint would strive at the chance of creating something for use on such a far reaching intended purpose however, so i guess it's catch 22. I detest the amount of corporate influence and financial input that goes into the political process in the U.S, U.K and all over the world. Here are two loaves of bread - loaf one is better than loaf two because the packaging has had so much more money thrown at it's branding and it looks SOOO much more appealing - my mouth is watering. This is the bullshit world we live in.
Overall, I'm with rolling Stone and San Francisco designer Mike Montiero's tagline: "Fuck You. Pay Me." :D
Nice post Zack - I went off on a tangent there!

It's extra ironic this time over in the comments. Anyone who opposes spec work is an "evil greedy Rethuglican" who is also "a plant being paid with Koch Cash".
The winner gets a copy of their own design framed and signed by Obama.
Oh, the irony.

It says...
"Thanks for the poster!
....Barack Obama.
PS: Now I need free placard, bumper sticker and t-shirt designs. Please have the first proofs ready by 4pm."
Seriously - Obama is a cheapskate. I saw him in '07 at a rally and wanted to get a keepsake - a Hope poster or something. Nothing. I've been to rallies before and they're basically force-feeding everything on you - posters, bumper stickers, pins... Obama? Nothing. Right before he started his speech one of his aides came out and handed out ONE box of placards - about 100 of them - to the people in the first couple rows around the stage so it would look like everyone had them when the speech was shown on tv. He was handing them out ONE at a time.
