official hello and critique
brianharrington (8 points) | Mon, 2008-03-03 18:36I have been "lurking" around creative bits for quite sometime now. Many knowledgeable people here!
My name is Brian, like many of you I'm a graphic designer but I can offer some special knowledge in the offset printing world. My full-time job is being a prepress specialist for a printing company, so I would be happy to help with any printing quandary.
I was hoping I could get some criticism on my business card. As side work seems to be steadily picking up and constantly being asked for my card. It has left me ready to launch myself into the market. Below is the card. I am having trouble coming up with a tag line on the front and I am not even sure if I am heading in the final direction. Any help/compliments/concerns/ would be awesome!
thanks

first off, as much as i once contemplated it even for myself, i'll suggest as i almost always have, to ditch the idea of unconventional sized business cards. Like i said, i once debated it for myself, and i realized quickly that whenever i have business cards that aren't the same as my other ones, i tend to ditch them. I have stacks of peoples cards, not one is odd shaped.
with that said, you seem to be headed in an interesting and simple direction. a clean design. Not sure what the dog represents, maybe play more with the idea of the name "fire"
best of luck..

I have an irregular sized biz card and it's handy because it fits in anyone's wallet (full size cards can be just a little too big for wallet slots!) but it's true if the stock isn't strong enough your message, and your card, can get lost.
Love the back design, not so much the front; it needs work. But finish that up and post the new front to this thread. Would love to see the final.

as long as it's not a problematic size then i can see it working a bit better. 4" seems long though for a card. just my $0.02

Interesting fire tiger. Did it not like the taste of design, or was it regurgitating it? Gee.
Another play on the concept--if the alphabet line isn't simply a spot to denote future address info, you might want to consider replacing the "g" with a flame to tie in with the front.
Overall, liking the look.

thanks for the comment, I am moving away from the front design, sticking with the back, the size is going to stay. I'll put something up as it develops.
thanks again
Thanks for offering to be a resource.
I'm happy to hear that you're ditching the dog. I'm concerned about the size, but if you're set on that, so be it. One thing I'd encourage you to think about, though, is that the "r" after the "fi" ligature in "fire" looks as if it's part of the ligature. Purists might have trouble with that; i.e., might think your typography skills are either not quite up to snuff, or that you treat that aspect of design less traditionally than most clients would expect.
Since you're new, and have access to a press and everything, you might want to consider designing your card with a perpendicular perf at the vertical line where a standard business card would end, with the "tear-off" part being some sort of token for a discount on new clients' first jobs. Folks who want to can tear the token off so your card fits their bizcard file, or keep it as is. I did a job similar to that recently that worked great.

Yea, I noticed the ligatures option was on, it wasn't my intention to have the letters all crammed together, either. I think the font was rendering poorly in the pdf. It is also too bold to what I have spec'd. The logo is actually supposed to be a tiger. Is it not decipherable as that? I also attached the new version. The two jpg's. Thanks again!
I preferred your first attempt. And yes, I did recognize the symbol/logo as a "fire tiger".
Your graphics are great.

I also posted a few earlier attempts I did in January I'm not sure where I was standing with them. Going back might be better than where I am going now.
Minimalist design is always a tough cookie. Hope people don't mind the blurred out info. Slight paranoia

That should dispel any confusion as to what type of animal you've depicted. I'm LOVING that fire tiger. Well done.
