"Old Media"

If Web sites and other electronic end products constitute "new media," what do we call the other stuff (ink on paper, signage, etc.)? Certainly not "old media." Any suggestions?

Media. :) Actually I think by definition 'non-digital media' would be more precise:

Since we use digital means to achieve these more traditional ends, it's not really NON-digital. That would give people the idea that no computers are involved, and I don't want to convey that.

traditional media?
i've heard of it in that term in the past..someone was asking me to make them some "traditional media for us" they wanted some flyers and business cards and information sheets for in their shop.

That occurred to me, too, Robert. (Or is it Bob? Or Rob? Or Mr. Grant? I forget. Old, you know.)

That seems like a good choice, but I was wondering if there's a term floating around in the trade that I haven't yet come across.

Thanks for the suggestion.

  • mr. makes me feel too old,
  • bob is what got some kid in elementary school beat up (i'm not that young, but it does say that i've ALWAYS hated "bob")
  • Robert is what i get called when my mom is mad at me..
  • and Robbie is only used by about 3 people, everyone else i ignore. it's weird how that one works

I've heard the term "dry" media before, too. (As far as where that came from, I'm not sure... because I certainly wouldn't call "new/digital" media "wet").

Neither would I, but it kinda fits, doesn't it?

Hmm. "Dry media." Don't know. Maybe. But I still want to check into this some more.

Good thought -- thanks!

Good question Mara. And where does new media fit in when it comes to below the line and above the line advertising?

And obviously print media only when the final product came through a printer.

Wikipeadia breaks it up into the following: Print Media, Electronic Media (incl. digital), Mass Media (Broadcast - TV, etc & Print - Magazines, etc.) etc.

In it's article on New Media (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_media) it seems to prefer the term "Old Media". Basically playing off the difference as an analogue vs digital concept. Interesting article all the same.
