Updated profiles, user points and more
Ivan | Sun, 2009-04-05 21:18I've updated the user profiles, so they are now neatly organized into tabs and we have a couple of new fields, so please go to My account, then Edit and update the 4 tabs. Most importantly make sure you select your preference if you want to be contacted for freelance jobs and job offers.
Also, you will notice that there are points associated with your account. These points are activated retroactively for your activity on creativebits and they will be added to your account every time you create any piece of content. Here are the values given for different activities:
- Posting a blog entry: 10 (if you want permission to blog write me)
- Posting a forum topic: 5 points
- Posting work for critique: 5 points
- Posting a weblink: 3 points
- Posting a comment: 1 point
I have some ideas on how we could use this point system in the future, and I'm happy to receive any suggestions.
Finally I've updated the News section, so now it shows embedded images for topics, which makes this page much more useful. Let me know if you think I should add any important news source that is currently missing.
Do let me know what other things shall I work on, so I can add them to my to-do list.

Do I have to sign-up to get points?
Of course. This is members only.
You think it will stop spammers? I think so.

Ivan, this is great, but I can't find my specialization of Prepress and Industry of Printing under "Work" tab.
Gloria, just put other for now. I'll expand the list to be more detailed.
One point for commenting? Haha, I fail. Suddenly, my feelings of self-worth on this site have dissipated. :P
It's all about quality and not quantity. :P
I think we should be able to "digg" up and down people... though, that may give me a complex if I end up the lowest.
Yes, that's a really cool idea. I will work on it! :)
Thanks, Pokie. Yeah, a thumbs-up/thumbs-down karma system is a great idea!
Reminds me of a feature from the latest Windows7 builed!
There may be hope for you yet!

I am not Steve Ballmer pretending not to be me!
it would be great if you could use points to buy and publish your own blog post on the main page. (say 100 points for a post) ofc u can supervise the content, but that would make this site even more community driven. and is nice to know you kinda "worked" that post so you'll have to make it count.
you could also take the points into consideration when taking user polls.
a statistic such as "40% of the most active and old users think that ...." is more meaningful than "40% of the total voters think that ... "
I like both ideas.
